Stephen King’s classic novel reimagined as an eight-episode series set to debut this fall
Prime Video has released the first official images from its upcoming original series Carrie, offering audiences an early look at the highly anticipated television adaptation of Stephen King’s landmark debut novel. The series, created by acclaimed writer and director Mike Flanagan, is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Prime Video this fall in more than 240 countries and territories.
The project marks the first time King’s 1974 novel has been adapted into a television series, bringing a fresh interpretation to one of horror fiction’s most enduring stories. Known for acclaimed productions such as Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer, while also directing four episodes.
A modern retelling of a horror classic
The new adaptation reimagines Carrie for a contemporary audience while retaining the emotional core that made the original story a cultural phenomenon. The series follows Carrie White, portrayed by Summer Howell, a socially isolated teenager whose life changes dramatically following the death of her father.
Having spent much of her childhood sheltered by her intensely protective mother, Margaret White, played by Samantha Sloyan, Carrie is thrust into the challenges of public high school. There, she must navigate a viral bullying scandal, the pressures of social media culture and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic abilities that develop alongside her adolescence.
Prime Video describes the series as a bold and timely reinvention of the coming-of-age story, exploring themes of cruelty, compassion and personal identity. Across eight episodes, the narrative expands on the original novel by deepening character development and examining the chain of events that ultimately lead to the story’s pivotal and tragic climax.
The series seeks to explore not only the consequences of bullying and social exclusion but also broader questions about whether Carrie is destined to become a hero, a villain or something more complex.
Extensive casting search leads to Summer Howell
The role of Carrie White was awarded to Canadian actress Summer Howell following a broad casting process that reportedly included more than 1,000 actors. Landing the iconic role places Howell at the centre of one of the most recognizable stories in modern horror.
She is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Tota as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.
The casting reflects Prime Video’s efforts to balance established performers with emerging talent as the streaming platform continues to invest in premium scripted content.
Mike Flanagan and Stephen King reunite
Flanagan’s involvement is expected to draw significant interest from both horror fans and industry observers. Over the past decade, the filmmaker has built a reputation for character-driven storytelling and successful adaptations of literary works.
The project also reunites Flanagan with Stephen King, who serves as an executive producer on the series. The pair have previously collaborated on adaptations including Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game, both of which received strong critical reception.
Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Carrie represents another major investment in franchise-driven and literary-based content as streaming platforms compete for global audiences.
A story with enduring cultural influence
Published in 1974, Carrie was Stephen King’s first novel and launched a literary career that would eventually see his books sell more than 350 million copies worldwide. The novel spent 14 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list and has been translated into more than 35 languages.
Its impact extended beyond publishing through Brian De Palma’s 1976 film adaptation, which earned Academy Award nominations and became one of the most influential horror films of its era. The release of the new series coincides with the 50th anniversary of the original film adaptation.
Prime Video expands premium content offering
The launch of Carrie comes as Prime Video continues to strengthen its position in the global streaming market through a combination of original productions, licensed content and live sports programming.
The platform offers subscribers access to a growing catalogue of Amazon MGM Studios originals alongside movies, television series and premium add-on subscriptions. Prime Video has also expanded its sports portfolio in recent years, including coverage of major professional leagues.
With the release of first-look images now generating attention among fans and industry analysts alike, Carrie is positioned as one of Prime Video’s most closely watched scripted releases of the year, bringing a modern television perspective to one of horror’s most iconic stories.
