TORONTO, The Ontario government is highlighting tax reductions and new funding for business advisory services as it marks Small Business Week, emphasizing the role of more than 500,000 small businesses in supporting employment and economic activity across the province.
In a statement released Monday, Associate Minister Nina Tangri said small businesses employ nearly 2.5 million people in Ontario and remain essential to local economies, particularly as companies face rising costs and uncertainty surrounding trade relations with the United States.
The province is pointing to a reduction in the small business corporate income tax rate, alongside a three-year investment in advisory services, as central measures intended to improve business competitiveness.
Ontario Small Businesses Support Nearly 2.5 Million Jobs
Small businesses operate across a wide range of Ontario industries, including retail, hospitality, health care, manufacturing and professional services.
According to the provincial government, more than 500,000 small businesses contribute to economic activity while providing employment opportunities and essential services in communities throughout Ontario.
Tangri acknowledged their importance in her Small Business Week statement.
“Over 500,000 small businesses across the province power Ontario’s economy, employing close to 2.5 million people. Whether it’s a restaurant, convenience store, independent pharmacy or small manufacturer, they deliver essential services, bring critical goods to market and create local jobs, all while building vibrant and connected communities.”
The government also identified economic pressures associated with U.S. trade actions as a challenge for Ontario employers.
Tangri said measures introduced since 2018 are providing businesses with approximately $12 billion in annual savings, according to provincial estimates.
Ontario Cuts Small Business Corporate Tax Rate to 2.2 Per Cent
One of the government’s principal measures is a reduction in the provincial small business corporate income tax rate from 3.2 per cent to 2.2 per cent, announced in the 2026 Ontario Budget.
The province estimates the reduction will deliver $1.1 billion in tax relief and provide annual savings of up to $5,000 for more than 375,000 small businesses.
Tax Relief Aims to Support Hiring and Business Investment
The lower corporate tax rate is intended to help eligible businesses manage operating expenses, retain employees and make investments in future growth.
For small companies facing uncertain demand and increased operating costs, reduced tax obligations can provide additional financial flexibility.
The government has presented the measure as part of its broader objective of making Ontario a more competitive jurisdiction for business investment and job creation within the G7.
The projected savings are provincial estimates, and the financial benefit for individual businesses will depend on their taxable income and eligibility.
Ontario Invests $49 Million in Small Business Advisory Centres
Alongside tax relief, the province is committing a record $49 million over three years to its network of Ontario Small Business Advisory Centres.
The centres provide services to entrepreneurs and business owners at more than 50 locations across Ontario.
Business Owners Can Access Training, Consultations and Grants Information
The funding is intended to improve access to one-on-one business consultations, training programs and information about available provincial grants and support initiatives.
These services are designed to assist entrepreneurs at different stages of business development, from establishing a new company to expanding an existing operation.
The province says its advisory network is intended to make business assistance more accessible across both urban and smaller communities.
Futurpreneur and Summer Company Support Young Entrepreneurs
Ontario is also continuing investments in Futurpreneur and Summer Company, two initiatives aimed at helping younger residents develop business skills and pursue entrepreneurship.
The programs support access to training, professional networks and opportunities to secure capital.
Programs Focus on the Next Generation of Business Owners
Futurpreneur supports young entrepreneurs through financing and business development resources, while Summer Company helps students gain experience starting and operating businesses.
The province says these initiatives are intended to reduce barriers to entrepreneurship and encourage the development of new businesses across Ontario.
The statement did not specify additional funding amounts for the two programs.
Ontario Encourages Residents to Support Local Businesses
Small Business Week provides an opportunity for governments and business organizations to recognize the economic contributions of independent companies and entrepreneurs.
In Ontario, the government’s message this year places particular emphasis on tax competitiveness, access to business support and protecting employment amid economic uncertainty.
Tangri concluded by thanking business owners and workers for their contributions and encouraging consumers to support local enterprises.
“On behalf of the Government of Ontario, thank you to all small business owners, entrepreneurs and workers for your relentless determination, hard work and invaluable contributions to our province. I encourage everyone to continue protecting Ontario-made innovation and jobs by supporting your local businesses.
Happy Small Business Week.”
The province’s combination of corporate tax reductions, advisory funding and entrepreneurship programs reflects its stated approach to supporting small businesses as they navigate economic pressures and plan for future growth.
