Province Invests More Than $202 Million in State-of-the-Art Facility Expected to Add Over 100 Beds and Expand Specialized Care
WINDSOR, Ont. — The Ontario government has officially broken ground on the new Fancsy Family Hospital in Windsor, marking a major milestone in the province’s long-term plan to expand health-care capacity and improve access to hospital services across Windsor-Essex and Southwestern Ontario.
Supported by a provincial investment of more than $202 million, the new hospital will add space for over 100 additional beds, bringing total capacity to nearly 600 beds. The project is part of Ontario’s broader strategy to modernize health infrastructure and strengthen access to care through more than 50 major hospital projects planned across the province over the next decade.
Provincial officials say the new facility will help meet growing demand for health services in the Windsor-Essex region while supporting the government’s objective of connecting more residents with primary and specialized care closer to home.
“As Windsor-Essex continues to grow, our government is ensuring families and workers continue to have access to convenient, world-class health care services close to home, including through our $64 billion plan to build and upgrade more than 50 hospitals across Ontario,” said Premier Doug Ford. “With more than 100 additional beds, a 24/7 emergency department and surgical services, the new Fancsy Family Hospital will connect more patients to specialized care, where and when they need it.”
New Hospital to Consolidate Acute Care Services Under One Roof
The new Fancsy Family Hospital is planned as a modern, approximately two-million-square-foot facility that will bring a broad range of acute-care services together under one roof.
Expanded Services and Increased Capacity
Once completed, the hospital is expected to provide:
- More than 100 additional hospital beds, increasing total capacity to nearly 600 beds
- A new 24-hour emergency department
- Expanded cancer care services
- Complex trauma support
- Maternal and newborn care
- Surgical and critical care services
- Neurology and cardiology programs
- Additional single-patient rooms designed to improve privacy and reduce the spread of infections
The facility is intended to serve as a regional hub for advanced medical care, strengthening Windsor Regional Hospital’s role as a tertiary-care provider for Southwestern Ontario.
Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones said the project represents a significant investment in the future of health care in the region.
“Our government is making historic investments to protect Ontario’s health-care system, ensuring that more people in Windsor-Essex can connect to the care they need, where and when they need it,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “Today’s announcement marks another major milestone toward the new, state-of-the-art Fancsy Family Hospital, which will transform health care across the region. Once complete, it will provide patients and families with access to world-class hospital services for generations to come.”
Part of Ontario’s $64 Billion Health Infrastructure Strategy
The Windsor project forms part of Ontario’s commitment to invest approximately $64 billion in health infrastructure over the next 10 years.
According to the province, the investment will support the construction and expansion of more than 50 major hospital projects and add approximately 3,000 new hospital beds across Ontario.
The government is also allocating more than $281 million during the 2026-27 fiscal year for critical infrastructure upgrades and repairs at 126 hospitals and 67 community health-care facilities, representing a 9.4 per cent increase from the previous year.
Windsor Regional Hospital will receive more than $2.6 million through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund in 2026-27 to address ongoing infrastructure needs.
Regional Health-Care Hub
Windsor Regional Hospital currently serves as the region’s tertiary-care provider for a range of specialized services, including trauma care, dialysis, cardiac services, stroke treatment, neurosurgery, intensive care, mental health programs, family birthing, neonatal intensive care, pediatric services and cancer treatment.
The province recently completed a separate $30 million investment supporting renovations and expansions to the hospital’s cardiac catheterization laboratory and cancer centre, improving access to specialized care for residents throughout Southwestern Ontario.
Local Leaders Welcome Construction Milestone
Regional political and health-care leaders described the groundbreaking as a significant step forward after years of planning and advocacy.
“Breaking ground means we are moving from planning to building. Our government made a commitment to invest in health-care infrastructure, and today we are seeing that commitment become reality.”
— Anthony Leardi, MPP, Essex
“Today’s groundbreaking of the new Fancsy Family Hospital is a defining milestone for Windsor-Essex. More than the start of construction, it marks the beginning of a new chapter in health care for our region. We are proud to celebrate this historic achievement and the brighter, healthier future it will help build for generations to come.”
— Andrew Dowie, MPP, Windsor—Tecumseh
“This is an incredibly exciting, transformative milestone for Windsor Regional Hospital and our entire community, who have been working toward this day since the need for a new hospital was first identified more than a decade ago. Looking Ahead
With construction now underway, the Fancsy Family Hospital is poised to become one of the largest and most significant health-care infrastructure projects in Ontario. Provincial officials say the development will play a key role in supporting population growth, reducing pressure on existing facilities and improving access to high-quality care for residents across Windsor-Essex for decades to come.
