Regional housing initiative aims to attract and retain healthcare workers across North Island communities
CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. — The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) has opened the waitlist for its new Health Professionals Housing (HPH) facility in Campbell River, marking a significant step in efforts to strengthen healthcare recruitment and retention across northern Vancouver Island.
The housing project, located near Campbell River Hospital, is scheduled to welcome its first residents in September and is designed to provide flexible accommodation options for healthcare professionals at various stages of their careers.
The facility is intended to support a broad range of healthcare workers, including those visiting the region for temporary assignments, completing clinical training or placements, relocating to the area, or establishing long-term medical practices and employment opportunities within North Island communities.
Flexible Housing Designed for Healthcare Workers
The HPH development features 20 suites tailored to meet the diverse needs of healthcare professionals and their families. Accommodation options range from studio apartments to two-bedroom units suitable for individuals, couples, and families.
Residents will be able to access housing for periods ranging from one week to more than a year. Short-term accommodations are fully furnished, while longer-term units are partially furnished to provide greater flexibility for those settling into the community.
Several suites offer additional amenities, including pet-friendly options, private balconies, and ocean views. Utilities and parking are included in rental rates, helping to simplify the transition for healthcare professionals moving to or working temporarily in the region.
The SRD says the project is designed to provide safe, convenient, and attainable housing while allowing healthcare workers to become familiar with the community and develop long-term connections to the area.
Addressing Regional Healthcare Challenges
Local officials say the project reflects a collaborative regional approach to addressing one of the most significant barriers facing healthcare recruitment in many communities: access to housing.
“This project is a great example of what local governments can accomplish when they take a regional approach to solving challenges, said Mark Baker, SRD Board Chair. “By helping healthcare professionals find housing and establish roots in our communities, we are making a long-term investment in the health and well-being of residents across the North Island.”
The initiative comes as many communities across British Columbia continue to face healthcare staffing shortages and increasing competition for qualified professionals. Housing availability and affordability have become key factors influencing recruitment and retention efforts, particularly in smaller and rural communities.
By providing dedicated accommodations close to healthcare facilities, the SRD hopes the project will help remove barriers for professionals considering work opportunities in the region.
Promotional Campaign Highlights Community Lifestyle
To support the launch, the SRD has released a promotional video showcasing the new facility, available amenities, and lifestyle opportunities in Campbell River.
The region is known for its access to outdoor recreation, including ocean activities, river and forest experiences, and mountain adventures. Community leaders believe these lifestyle advantages, combined with stable housing options, can help attract healthcare workers seeking both professional opportunities and a high quality of life.
Campbell River serves as an important healthcare hub for North Island communities, providing services to residents across a large geographic area. Officials say maintaining a strong healthcare workforce is essential to supporting growing demand for medical services throughout the region.
Partnership Supports Project Completion
The SRD also acknowledged the contribution of Seymour Pacific Homes, the project’s builder and a key partner in bringing the development to completion.
The organization says partnerships between local governments, builders, and community stakeholders were instrumental in advancing the project from planning to occupancy.
With the September opening approaching, healthcare professionals interested in securing accommodation can now join the waitlist and review eligibility requirements through the project’s online portal.
Officials say the Health Professionals Housing project represents a long-term investment in healthcare infrastructure, helping ensure communities across the North Island can continue attracting and retaining the skilled professionals needed to provide essential healthcare services.
Healthcare professionals seeking additional information about the housing facility, eligibility criteria, or application procedures can access details and the promotional video through the SRD’s Health Professionals Housing website.
