Ontario Coroner Schedules August 10, 2026 Start for Mandatory Inquest
The Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario has announced a new date for the mandatory inquest into the death of Raymond Alliman, with proceedings scheduled to begin on Monday, August 10, 2026, at 9:30 a.m.
Dr. Louise McNaughton-Filion, Regional Supervising Coroner for the East Region and Ottawa Office, confirmed that the inquest will proceed under the provisions of Ontario’s Coroners Act. Bonnie Goldberg will serve as the presiding officer, while Robert Kozak has been appointed as inquest counsel.
The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Alliman, who was 31 years old when he died on June 3, 2017, following an interaction with officers from the Ottawa Police Service on the same day.

Jury to Examine Circumstances of the Death
Under Ontario law, an inquest is mandatory in certain cases to publicly examine the facts surrounding a death. The proceedings are intended to establish the circumstances of the incident rather than assign civil or criminal liability.
During the hearing, the jury will review evidence related to the events leading up to Mr. Alliman’s death. Following the presentation of evidence, jurors may make recommendations designed to help prevent similar deaths in the future.
Those recommendations are non-binding but can be directed to government agencies, public institutions, law enforcement organizations, or other bodies that may be in a position to improve policies, procedures, or public safety measures.

According to the Office of the Chief Coroner, the inquest is expected to continue for approximately six days and will hear testimony from around seven witnesses.
The proceedings will be conducted entirely by video conference, allowing members of the public to observe remotely.
