The Mon Sheong Golf Classic 2026 raised more than $150,000 to support the expansion of long-term care services in Ontario, as growing demand for senior care continues to put pressure on available beds across the province.
Held Thursday, August 20, at Bayview Golf and Country Club, the annual tournament brought together golfers, donors and sponsors in support of Mon Sheong Foundation’s Because We Care Capital Campaign. The fundraising initiative is helping finance new long-term care centers intended to serve seniors facing extended waits for care.
Golf Tournament Supports New Long-Term Care Centers
Participants competed in an 18-hole tournament while raising funds for Mon Sheong Foundation’s ongoing expansion projects.
“The golfers’ participation is more than a display of sportsmanship. It reflects the big heart they have for our seniors. Our supporters are the reason we are able to continue building new long-term care facilities faster, allowing us to serve more seniors sooner,” Tim Kwan, Chairman of Mon Sheong Foundation.
The organization said proceeds from the tournament will help advance construction of additional long-term care capacity as demand continues to outpace the number of available beds.
Markham Facility Already Faces Significant Wait List
Garth Low, President of Mon Sheong Foundation, highlighted the scale of that demand, pointing to new projects underway in Markham and Richmond Hill.
“We are thrilled to see golfers enjoying friendly competition while giving back to the community. As the demand for long-term care beds intensifies across the province, Mon Sheong Foundation remains steadfast in advancing new facility projects to relieve waitlist pressures. Our first long-term care facility in Markham is set to welcome its first residents later this year. Since being listed with Ontario Health atHome, this 320-bed care home has already accumulated a wait list of over 1,700 people. Meanwhile, our second home in Richmond Hill is slated for completion by the end of next year, adding another 288 beds once operational. With our combined wait list across all six of our homes exceeding 12,000—averaging 12 people per bed—community support for building more care facilities is more important than ever.”
The figures underscore a broader challenge for Ontario’s senior-care system. For U.S. readers, long-term care homes in Canada serve a role comparable to nursing homes and other residential skilled-care facilities in the United States, although funding and administration operate under different provincial health-care structures.
Once operational, the two new Mon Sheong projects are expected to provide a combined 608 additional long-term care beds.

Team Ecolab Takes Championship Title
Beyond fundraising, the Golf Classic featured several competitive events and awards. Players competed for the team championship and runner-up honors, along with a Hole-in-One cash prize, Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive awards.
Team Ecolab finished the tournament as the championship team, while Team Michael Walsh secured the runner-up position.
Following the competition, participants gathered for a dinner reception recognizing golfers and sponsors. The evening also included a silent auction and raffle drawing, extending the fundraising activities beyond the golf course.
Fundraising Focus Remains on Senior Care Expansion
The 2026 Mon Sheong Golf Classic combined community fundraising with recreational competition at a time when demand for long-term care remains substantial. With more than 12,000 people reportedly waiting across the organization’s six homes, Mon Sheong Foundation is using its capital campaign to increase capacity through new facilities.
The more than $150,000 raised through this year’s tournament will support those expansion efforts, including projects designed to bring hundreds of additional long-term care beds into service.
