Massachusetts rock band D-Tension & The Secrets have released their self-titled debut album, a nine-track collection combining alternative rock, punk, power pop and traditional rock influences. Led by the single “Hate To See You Go,” the record marks a new chapter for frontman D-Tension, who previously established his career in hip-hop before moving into rock music.
The album is the band’s first project recorded together as a group, following earlier releases developed through remote collaborations. Its musical direction draws on several rock traditions, emphasizing melodic arrangements, guitar-driven performances and personal storytelling.
From Hip-Hop Career to Massachusetts Rock Scene
Before forming The Secrets, D-Tension built an international reputation as a hip-hop performer and producer. His career included touring with DMX, Ja Rule and Biz Markie, alongside production work involving Slug of Atmosphere, Blackalicious and Mr. Lif.
His transition into rock began during the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, when he acquired a Fender Jazzmaster guitar through an Instagram contest.
Despite having no previous guitar-playing experience, he began learning through online tutorials. By December 2020, he was recording original rock compositions.
“Lock down had its advantages,” D-Tension says. “All I did that year was play guitar.”
Those recordings eventually became Secret Rock & Roll Project, released in 2021. The project featured remote contributions from Craig Silverman of Agnostic Front, Frank Pino of the Andrew W.K. band and drummer Brian Viglione, known for his work with Dresden Dolls and Violent Femmes.
Formation of The Secrets in Lowell
Following the reopening of live music venues, D-Tension assembled The Secrets in his hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts.
The group subsequently released Tales From The Pub through Boston independent label Red on Red Records and began performing live, including participation in the Rock & Roll Rumble competition.
Although D-Tension’s background is rooted in hip-hop, the band’s material focuses on conventional rock instrumentation rather than combining rap and rock styles.
The new self-titled album represents the group’s first opportunity to develop and record a complete collection together.
“Hate To See You Go” Draws Inspiration From Personal Loss
The album’s opening single, “Hate To See You Go,” incorporates Irish punk influences associated with Boston-area acts such as Dropkick Murphys, alongside stylistic elements reminiscent of Rancid and Flogging Molly.
The song originated following the death of D-Tension’s friend Lesley, a soul singer with whom he had planned to collaborate.
Lesley died in isolation during the pandemic, leaving the musician without an opportunity to complete their proposed recording project.
Rather than producing a conventional ballad, D-Tension developed an energetic drinking song intended to celebrate her life.
The lyrics also reference other personal losses, including his childhood friend Turtle and Frankie, a cat he raised from infancy.
The resulting track combines themes of grief, remembrance and friendship with a communal sing-along arrangement.
Nine Songs Explore Different Rock Influences
Beyond the lead single, the album moves between several musical styles.
“Banned” incorporates psychobilly influences, while “Crime Spree” draws on the dark humour associated with singer-songwriter Warren Zevon. “Violated” adopts a harder rock approach influenced by bands such as AC/DC.
D-Tension describes the album’s varied musical identity as: “Your favorite hour of rock and roll radio, where no two songs sound alike but are all rock and roll.”
The collection also includes “Talking To The Mirror,” “Crab Rangoon,” “Just Gets Better,” “Troll Farm” and “Out of The Middle.”
D-Tension Builds on New England Music Recognition
D-Tension’s transition into rock follows an established career in the regional music industry.
He was inducted into the New England Music Hall of Fame in 2024 and has received two Boston Music Awards, a New England Music Award and a New England Urban Music Award.
The musician, who is on the autism spectrum, has described music as a central part of his identity and creative expression.
His latest release brings together his experience in production, songwriting and live performance while establishing a more collaborative direction for The Secrets.
