Vancouver heavy metal veterans embark on 30-plus date trek spanning the country
VANCOUVER — Canadian heavy metal band Iron Kingdom has begun an extensive cross-country tour to support the release of its sixth studio album, Shadows and Dust, marking one of the most ambitious touring campaigns in the Vancouver group’s 15-year history.
The tour, which launched in Nanaimo, B.C. on July 2, will take the band through more than 30 cities and communities across Canada, stretching from British Columbia to Newfoundland before concluding in Kelowna, B.C. on Aug. 23. Along the way, Iron Kingdom is scheduled to perform at two notable Canadian metal festivals: Armstrong Metal Fest in British Columbia and Loud As Hell Open Air Festival in Alberta.
The nationwide trek follows the June 6 release of Shadows and Dust, an album that sees the band expanding its lyrical and thematic scope while maintaining the traditional heavy metal sound that has defined its career.
New album explores darker themes while maintaining classic metal roots
According to bassist and lyricist Leighton Holmes, the new record delves into challenging emotional territory while remaining grounded in themes of resilience and perseverance.
“The album explores a dark realm of topics, from death, hardship, and the lowest points of human emotion, balanced by music that offers hope and the will to fight on,” says bassist and lyricist Leighton Holmes.
The 10-track album runs approximately 48 minutes and combines elements of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) tradition with melodic storytelling and the band’s trademark twin-guitar approach.
Songs on the record draw inspiration from a wide range of sources, including historical events, mythology, fantasy literature and personal reflection. Tracks such as “Defenders” are inspired by the Battle of Gdansk, while “Deadhouse Gates” and “Blood and Steel” draw influence from the acclaimed Malazan fantasy series. Other songs tackle broader philosophical themes involving time, purpose and human compassion.
The album’s track list includes “Defenders,” “Eternal Emperor,” “Dreamless Sea,” “Deadhouse Gates,” “Line Of Fire,” “Blood And Steel,” “Shadow Of Time,” “Dark Demands,” “Starlight,” and “Sacred Fire.”
Building a reputation through persistence and global touring
Formed in Vancouver in 2011, Iron Kingdom has steadily built a following within the traditional heavy metal community through a combination of extensive touring, independent releases and a commitment to classic metal influences.
Drawing inspiration from bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Helloween, Riot, Savatage, The Scorpions and Rush, the group has established itself as a standard-bearer for traditional heavy metal in Canada.
Over the past decade, the band has toured throughout Canada, the United States, Europe and Brazil. Its international appearances have included performances at Germany’s Keep It True festival and tours alongside acts such as Night Demon and Blaze Bayley.
The band’s journey has not been without challenges. Through lineup changes, serious touring setbacks and broader disruptions affecting the live music industry, Iron Kingdom has continued to release new material and maintain an active touring schedule.
The current lineup features Chris Osterman on lead vocals and lead guitar, Leighton Holmes on bass, Megan Merrick on lead guitar and Max Friesen on drums.
Growing international recognition
The release of Shadows and Dust has generated positive reviews from a range of metal publications and critics, many of whom have highlighted the band’s musicianship, songwriting and dedication to traditional heavy metal.
Among the strongest endorsements came from The Metal Mag, which described the album as: “Ten tracks leading to a beautiful journey you will wish to live forever. A masterpiece to own with pleasure. Iron Kingdom has arrived on the stardom stairs, and it’s worth it 100/100.”
Other reviewers have praised the album’s balance of melody and power, with several noting its appeal to fans of classic bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Helloween and Savatage.
The album is available through major streaming platforms as well as Bandcamp and the band’s official online store. European fans also have access to a limited-edition release through France-based Steel Shark Records, featuring a double-CD package that combines Shadows and Dust with a retrospective collection of material from Iron Kingdom’s previous five albums.
Cross-country run highlights Canadian market focus
The current tour underscores Iron Kingdom’s continued emphasis on the Canadian live music market, with performances scheduled across British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Stops include major cities such as Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Halifax, Edmonton and Calgary, alongside performances in smaller communities that are often overlooked by national touring acts.
For a band that has spent more than a decade cultivating a grassroots audience, the tour represents both a celebration of the release of Shadows and Dust and a renewed effort to connect directly with fans across the country.
As Iron Kingdom continues its coast-to-coast journey, the Vancouver quartet is aiming to build on the momentum of what many critics have called one of the strongest releases of its career, while reinforcing its position within Canada’s traditional heavy metal scene.
