Toronto queer BIPOC rock artist releases first single as part of long-awaited album project
Toronto-based rock artist Feura has released her debut single “Lose Your Head,” marking the arrival of a new voice in Canada’s independent rock scene with a track that confronts identity, exclusion, and social pressure head-on.
The single, released Friday, was funded through support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Toronto Arts Council. Written by Korol Pikulik, Alexandra Jelilyan, and Marc Koecher, the song was produced by Illegal Audio, the production partnership of Marc Koecher and Lexie Jay, and mastered by Kristian Montano.
Feura, a queer, BIPOC, East Asian artist from Ontario, described the release as the culmination of years spent navigating exclusion and expectations while growing up in a small rural community.
“‘Lose Your Head’ came from this feeling that no matter what I do, people will find a reason to react to me just existing,” Feura says. “I’m queer, BIPOC, East Asian, and a type 1 diabetic, and whether I want to define myself by those labels or not, they’ve always shaped how people treat me. So, at a certain point it became: Screw it. If people are going to lose their minds over me anyway, I’m going to be fully myself. This record comes from that switch.”
A Personal Statement Framed as a Rock Anthem
“Lose Your Head” positions itself as both a personal statement and a critique of broader cultural expectations around identity and conformity. The song combines sharp lyrical commentary with a heavy rock production style intended to amplify its themes of resistance and self-definition.
The opening verse includes lines such as “You get mad that I got tattoos, chipped nail polish, studded shoulders,” using detailed imagery to challenge criticism directed at self-expression. The chorus — “You can’t help but lose your head every time I take a breath” — frames the backlash as something systemic rather than personal.
The track’s bridge further distills its central message with the line, “All you want is my freedom,” which Feura positions as a commentary on control and social discomfort with people who reject imposed limitations.
Feura said the song reflects broader pressures placed on artists and marginalized communities to conform in order to gain acceptance.
“Even existing as a queer East Asian artist in rock music feels radical, and it shouldn’t,” she says. “There’s so much pressure now to assimilate, to be digestible, and this record pushes back against that. At its core, it’s for anyone who’s ever felt like they had to ‘edit’ themselves to be accepted. It’s about being unapologetically yourself, even if it makes people uncomfortable, because that discomfort usually says more about them than it does about you.”
Independent Production and Arts Funding Support Emerging Talent
The single also highlights the role of public arts funding in supporting emerging Canadian musicians operating outside mainstream commercial channels.
Backed by grants from both the Canada Council for the Arts and the Toronto Arts Council, the project was developed in collaboration with Illegal Audio, which handled production duties. The final master was completed by Kristian Montano.
The production balances aggressive guitar-driven arrangements with space for Feura’s vocals to shift between confrontational and melodic tones, creating what the artist describes as a sound designed for both live venues and broader audiences seeking representation within rock music.
The release serves as the first preview of a forthcoming full-length album that Feura says has been years in development.
