Public input sought during National Volunteer Week celebrations
Residents invited to share experiences and ideas by May 13
The City of Cambridge is calling on residents to help shape the future of local volunteering through a newly launched public engagement survey, unveiled as part of this year’s National Volunteer Week.
Announced Monday, the initiative aims to gather feedback on how volunteer programs can better reflect the needs, expectations and diversity of the community. City officials say the input will directly inform how volunteer opportunities are designed and delivered in the coming years.
“This is an opportunity for our community to directly influence how volunteering evolves in Cambridge,” said Jan Liggett. “As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, we are reminded that volunteers are at the heart of what makes Cambridge a caring, connected, and vibrant community. This survey ensures we continue building a volunteer experience that reflects the diverse voices, interests, and experiences of our residents, while creating new relationships.”
Focus on accessibility, inclusion and community impact
The survey is designed to capture a broad range of perspectives, from long-time volunteers to residents who have never participated in civic programs. According to the City, responses will explore what is working well within existing volunteer frameworks, as well as identify gaps and barriers that may limit participation.
Officials say a key priority is improving accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring that volunteer opportunities are meaningful and available to a wider cross-section of residents. The feedback will also help the municipality better align volunteer roles with community needs and evolving expectations.
The initiative reflects a growing trend among Canadian municipalities to incorporate public engagement into program design, particularly in areas such as community services and civic participation. Deadline set for mid-May participation
Residents have until May 13 to complete the survey, which is available online through the City’s Engage Cambridge platform. Participation is open to all community members, regardless of prior volunteer experience.
City officials emphasize that the survey results will play a central role in shaping future volunteer opportunities, including how programs are promoted, structured and supported.
Volunteer recognition events underway
The survey launch coincides with National Volunteer Week, which runs from April 19 to 25. The annual event recognizes the contributions of volunteers across Canada and highlights their role in building resilient and connected communities.
As part of the celebrations, the City of Cambridge is hosting a volunteer appreciation event on April 22 to recognize individuals who contribute their time and effort to local initiatives. In addition, the City’s social media channels will feature profiles of selected volunteers throughout the week, showcasing their impact across various programs and events.
Mayor Liggett also issued a message of appreciation, acknowledging the dedication of volunteers who support municipal services and community activities year-round.
