The City of Cambridge is preparing to officially reopen the Kin1 Accessible Ball Diamond at Riverside Park, marking the return of a recreational facility designed to provide more inclusive baseball opportunities for athletes of different abilities.
The reopening celebration will take place Saturday, September 19, bringing together Buddy League athletes and their families, community supporters, donors, sponsors, members of Cambridge City Council and municipal staff. The invitation-only event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include exhibition baseball games, speeches, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the unveiling of a donor wall.
The event will highlight the community organizations and corporate supporters involved with the accessible ball diamond while giving Buddy League junior and senior athletes an opportunity to take the field.
Kin1 Accessible Ball Diamond Reopening Includes Full Day of Baseball
Activities will begin at 10 a.m. with an exhibition game featuring Buddy League Junior Athletes. The morning game will be followed by formal speeches at noon as municipal representatives and community partners recognize the reopening of the facility.
At 12:30 p.m., organizers will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony and unveil the donor wall. A media availability session is scheduled for 12:45 p.m.
The afternoon program will begin at 1 p.m. with the singing of O Canada and an opening pitch. Buddy League Senior Athletes and staff from Toyota will then participate in another exhibition game.
The celebration is scheduled to conclude at 3 p.m.
Riverside Park Facility Focuses on Accessible Recreation
The Kin1 Accessible Ball Diamond is located at Riverside Park, 1935 Rogers Drive in Cambridge. Accessible sports facilities are intended to reduce physical barriers that can prevent people with disabilities from participating fully in organized and recreational activities.
The reopening provides Cambridge with an opportunity to showcase the facility and recognize the athletes, families and community organizations involved in accessible baseball.
Buddy League will have a significant presence throughout the event, with its junior and senior athletes participating in separate exhibition games.
The event also reflects broader municipal efforts to provide recreational spaces that can accommodate a wider range of residents. Parks and sports infrastructure represent an important part of local community services, providing opportunities for physical activity as well as social and community participation.
Cambridge Officials, Sponsors and Donors to Attend Celebration
Cambridge Mayor and members of City Council are expected to attend the reopening, along with Lesley Head, General Manager of Community Services.
Representatives from several sponsors and major donors are also scheduled to be on site. Participating organizations include Jays Care Foundation, TD Bank, the L.S. Hallman Foundation, Toyota Motor Manufacturing and CUPE 1882, along with Buddy League.
Their participation will be recognized during a program that combines ceremonial activities with games involving the athletes who use accessible baseball programming.
Donor Wall to Recognize Community Support
One of the central moments of the afternoon will be the donor wall unveiling following the formal speeches. The ceremony will provide an opportunity to acknowledge organizations that supported the accessible facility and its role within the Cambridge community.
The involvement of foundations, businesses, organized labour and community groups demonstrates the range of partners connected with the project.
Toyota staff will also take a more direct role in the day’s activities by joining Buddy League Senior Athletes for the afternoon exhibition game.
While the reopening event is invitation-only, the celebration places renewed attention on accessible recreation and the role specialized infrastructure can play in expanding opportunities for community participation.
