Open-Air Burn Ban Remains in Effect as City Prioritizes Public Health
CAMBRIDGE, Ont. — The City of Cambridge has extended a series of temporary service adjustments as poor air quality continues to affect the region, prompting municipal officials to maintain restrictions and protective measures aimed at safeguarding residents and city staff.
The measures, announced Thursday, include the continued suspension of all open-air burn permits, the closure of outdoor pools, and the relocation of city-operated programs and events indoors. Officials say the actions will remain in place until air quality conditions improve.
According to the City, all existing open-air burning permits have been suspended and no new permits will be issued during the ban. While cooking fires remain permitted, residents are being encouraged to consider alternatives where possible to reduce additional air pollution.
The prolonged air quality concerns have led municipal officials to adjust operations across multiple departments while continuing to provide essential public services.
City Services Shift Indoors While Critical Operations Continue
Outdoor Pools Closed and Summer Programs Relocated
As part of the ongoing response, outdoor pools across Cambridge remain closed until further notice. City-run events, recreational activities, and summer camp programming have been moved indoors to reduce exposure to unhealthy air conditions.
The municipality has also paused non-essential outdoor work and services. Critical operations, however, continue to ensure public safety and maintain key municipal functions.
Officials said the service changes are intended to limit outdoor exposure for both employees and residents while air quality remains at concerning levels.
Cooling centres are continuing to operate for residents seeking relief from the conditions. City Hall will remain open until 7 p.m., while the W.G. Johnson Centre will stay open until 10 p.m. to provide accessible indoor spaces during the air quality event.
Although outdoor parks, splash pads and other recreational amenities remain open, the City is advising residents to exercise caution when spending time outdoors.
Health Officials Urge Vulnerable Residents to Limit Outdoor Activity
Municipal officials are particularly encouraging people who are more susceptible to the effects of air pollution to reduce outdoor exposure. This includes children, older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions.
Residents are being advised to monitor local air quality information and follow public health recommendations based on current conditions.
The City is also urging households to take steps to improve indoor air quality. Recommendations include keeping windows and doors closed whenever possible and avoiding activities that can contribute to indoor air pollution, such as smoking indoors or burning candles.
Officials noted that residents should remain alert for symptoms related to poor air quality and seek medical assistance when necessary.
Anyone experiencing severe breathing difficulties, chest pain or other medical emergencies is being instructed to call 9-1-1 immediately.
Outdoor Bookings Remain at Organizers’ Discretion
Sports Fields and Picnic Reservations Still Available
Outdoor recreation bookings, including sports field rentals and picnic area reservations, have not been cancelled by the City. Instead, organizers and permit holders are being encouraged to evaluate conditions carefully before proceeding with planned activities.
City officials recommend that organizations consider modifying, relocating or postponing outdoor events depending on local air quality conditions.
To provide flexibility during the ongoing air quality event, the municipality confirmed that refunds will be available upon request for cancellations related to poor air quality.
