City broadens annual arts event to showcase more local talent and activate public spaces
The City of Cambridge is expanding its annual Celebration of the Arts festival into a two-day event this June, broadening opportunities for residents, visitors and local artists to participate in one of the municipality’s signature cultural gatherings.
The Cambridge Celebration of the Arts will take place on Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20 at Civic Square in Downtown Cambridge, transforming the city centre into what organizers describe as an immersive artistic experience featuring live performances, visual arts, literary works, vendors and food trucks.
The move to extend the festival reflects the city’s ongoing efforts to strengthen community engagement and support local cultural industries while increasing activity in public spaces across the downtown core.
“Cambridge is home to a wealth of talented people, and expanding the Celebration of the Arts into a two-day festival creates even more opportunities to showcase local artists and performers to residents and visitors. I’m pleased to see it grow, and I encourage everyone to visit on one or both dates to enjoy this celebration of creativity and community,” said Mayor Jan Liggett.
Festival to feature wide range of local artistic talent
The free festival will highlight artists and performers from across Cambridge and the surrounding region, including painters, dancers, musicians, writers and poets. Organizers say the event is designed to provide accessible cultural programming while creating opportunities for local creatives to connect with the broader community.
Downtown Cambridge to host performances and community activities
Festival programming will take place at Civic Square, located at Cambridge City Hall on Dickson Street, with live entertainment and community activities scheduled throughout both days.
The Friday evening program will run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., while Saturday’s events will continue from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In addition to live performances and exhibits, visitors will also be able to explore local vendors and food trucks operating throughout the festival grounds.
The event will also include the Cambridge Art Attic silent auction at the Cambridge Centre for the Arts, offering attendees an opportunity to support local arts initiatives and artists through the purchase of donated works and items.
Meanwhile, the Fire Hall Museum will remain open to visitors during the festival, adding a historical and cultural component to the weekend’s programming.
Sponsorship support helps expand community festival
The City of Cambridge said TD Bank will sponsor the festival’s Main Stage this year, supporting the expanded format and entertainment programming.
Municipal officials say partnerships with community sponsors continue to play an important role in delivering large-scale cultural events while helping maintain free public access for residents and visitors.
The Celebration of the Arts has become part of the city’s broader strategy to promote economic activity and community engagement in the downtown core, particularly during the summer tourism and event season.
Festival aligns with Cambridge Connected strategic plan
According to the city, the event supports its Cambridge Connected strategic plan by helping activate public spaces and encouraging greater use of the downtown area as a destination for residents and visitors.
Municipal officials said cultural programming and community events remain a key component of efforts to create a vibrant and attractive city centre while supporting local businesses, tourism and the arts sector.
The expanded festival format is expected to increase foot traffic in the downtown area over the two-day period and provide additional exposure for participating artists, vendors and performers.
