BritBox has announced that its upcoming original drama Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence will premiere on Sept. 15 in Canada and the United States, marking the launch of the first contemporary English-language television adaptation based on the famed detective duo created by Agatha Christie.
The streaming platform also released the first teaser trailer for the six-part series, which stars Antonia Thomas, Josh Dylan and Academy Award-nominated actress Imelda Staunton.
“Today, BritBox announced Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence will premiere September 15th in the U.S. and Canada and released a new teaser trailer,” the company said in a statement.
The production forms part of BritBox’s ongoing strategy to expand its portfolio of premium British drama content as competition intensifies across the global streaming market.
Modern Adaptation Reimagines Classic Christie Characters
The series is based on Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence novels and short stories and is being positioned as a modern reimagining of the iconic mystery-solving pair.
“In the first contemporary English language television adaptation of Agatha Christie’s stories, Tommy and Tuppence are a detective duo for the ages,” BritBox said.
The story follows the pair as they navigate both romance and crime-solving adventures.
“They fall in love, fall out of it, and tumble back in, all while solving some thrilling, entertaining mysteries along the way.”
The six-part adaptation stars Antonia Thomas, known for The Good Doctor and Still Up, alongside Josh Dylan, recognized for Buccaneers and Mamma Mia 2. Imelda Staunton, whose credits include the Harry Potter franchise and the Paddington films, also plays a major role in the series.
BritBox serves as the lead commissioner for the project, which is produced by Lookout Point, part of BBC Studios, in association with Agatha Christie Limited.
Ensemble Cast Expands Mystery Drama
Additional cast members include Nicholas Richardson, Charlie Condou, Callie Cooke and Chizzy Akudolu, bringing together talent from several established British and international television productions.
“The cast also includes Nicholas Richardson (Wu-tang: An American Saga, Younger), Charlie Condou (Dr. Who, Unforgotten), Callie Cooke (F1, Cheaters), and Chizzy Akudolu (Little Disasters, The Woman in the Wall),” the statement said.
Behind the scenes, the series is written by Phoebe Eclair-Powell, who also serves as executive producer. The project marks her first commissioned television drama series.
“The series is written by Phoebe Eclair-Powell (The Road Trip, Harm), who also executive produces, in her first drama series commission for television,” BritBox noted.
Directing duties are divided between Fergus O’Brien, who will direct the first four episodes, and Ellie Heydon, who will helm the final two episodes. Stella Merz will serve as producer.
BritBox Strengthens Agatha Christie Collection
The new adaptation joins BritBox’s growing catalogue of Agatha Christie programming, an area that has become increasingly important to the platform’s identity as a destination for British mystery and drama content.
“Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence joins BritBox’s extensive collection of Agatha Christie adaptations including Towards Zero, Murder is Easy, Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?, Poirot, Marple, The Pale Horse and more,” the company said.
BBC Studios will oversee global sales for the production, further expanding the international distribution potential of the series.
The project was commissioned on behalf of BritBox by Robert Schildhouse, Jon Farrar and Stephen Nye. Executive producers also include Katie Draper, Laura Lankester, Louise Mutter and Juliette Howell from Lookout Point, along with James Prichard from Agatha Christie Limited.
BritBox Continues Global Expansion
Launched in 2017 and now owned by BBC Studios, BritBox has continued to grow internationally, operating in Canada, the United States, Australia and Nordic markets.
The platform describes itself as “the leading streaming destination for the best of British television,” offering a range of dramas, mysteries, comedies and documentaries aimed at audiences seeking premium British entertainment.
Lookout Point, the production company behind the series, has developed several high-profile television dramas in recent years, including Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack and Renegade Nell. The company is wholly owned by BBC Studios.
Agatha Christie Limited, which has managed the author’s literary and media rights since 1955, continues to oversee adaptations of Christie’s works for modern audiences through collaborations across film, television, publishing and digital platforms.
With Tommy & Tuppence, BritBox is betting that updated interpretations of classic detective stories can continue to attract streaming audiences while strengthening the platform’s position within the increasingly competitive premium drama market.
