Award-winning American photographer and bestselling author Michael Grecco, whose career spans celebrity portraiture, music photography, advertising and fine art, will visit Toronto’s Liss Gallery on November 7, 2026. The event will give collectors, photography enthusiasts and fans an opportunity to meet the artist behind Punk, Post Punk, New Wave and decades of influential entertainment photography.
Grecco, known for photographing prominent figures including Johnny Cash, Martin Scorsese and Gwen Stefani, has built an international reputation for his distinctive lighting techniques and dramatic portraits. His work has appeared in major publications, advertising campaigns and museum exhibitions worldwide.
From the Bronx to Boston’s Punk Rock Scene
Grecco’s interest in photography began at age 12 when he received a Mamiya/Sekor 35mm camera while growing up in the Bronx, New York.
He later studied filmmaking and photojournalism at Boston University’s School of Communications, where he trained under photographer and photography historian Carl Chiarenza.
While still a student, Grecco worked as a freelance photographer for the Associated Press before joining the Boston Herald. His newspaper photography earned several Boston Press Photographers awards.
Documenting a Transformative Era in Music
During the late 1970s and 1980s, Grecco became closely involved in Boston’s emerging punk and new wave music scenes.
Working with Boston Rock Magazine and radio station WBCN, he documented the city’s “pivotal role in launching the punk rock explosion” through photographs of musicians performing onstage and interacting backstage.
His photographs from 1978 to 1991 were collected in the 2020 Abrams Books publication Punk, Post Punk, New Wave: Onstage, Backstage, In Your Face.
The collection was described as a “photographic document of a critical pocket of the American punk scene in all its brash and seedy glory.”
The photographs were exhibited at Photo London in 2021 and subsequently became part of Days of Punk, a multimedia touring exhibition that premiered at La Térmica in Málaga, Spain, in early 2022.
The exhibition later travelled to England and the Southeast Museum of Photography.
Hollywood Photography and The X-Files
Grecco relocated to Los Angeles in the late 1980s, where assignments covering the Golden Globes, Emmy Awards and Academy Awards for People magazine helped establish his career in celebrity portraiture.
In 1993, Businessweek commissioned him to photograph its international “Entrepreneurs That Matter” special edition.
That assignment contributed to an opportunity with Fox’s television series The X-Files, where Grecco helped develop the programme’s distinctive visual atmosphere using cross-processing techniques and specialized camera filters.
Photographing Entertainment’s Biggest Names
His portfolio includes portraits of Robert Duvall, Will Ferrell, Kanye West, Mel Brooks, Ben Stiller, Penélope Cruz, Jet Li, Bill Murray, Joaquin Phoenix and Steve Martin.
His photographs have appeared on covers of Time, Wired, Entertainment Weekly, ESPN and People.
Beyond still photography, Grecco has directed film projects and worked extensively in fashion and advertising. In 2015, he created a cinemagraph for a Pizza Hut television advertisement broadcast during Billy on the Street.
International Recognition and Photography Awards
Frequently described as the “Master of Lighting,” Grecco has published two instructional books: The Art of Portrait Photography: Creative Lighting Techniques and Strategies in 2000 and Lighting and the Dramatic Portrait: The Art of Celebrity and Editorial Photography in 2006.
His professional honours include recognition in Photo District News’ “Lighting Master” series in 1995 and designation as a Hasselblad Master Photographer in 2001.
He has also received five Communication Arts Awards of Excellence and recognition at the 2011 Prix de la Photographie Paris for portraits of Steve Martin and Martin Scorsese.
In 2012, he received a Professional Photographer Leadership Award from the United Nations International Photographic Council.
Grecco has additionally advocated for photographers’ intellectual property rights, founding The American Society for Collective Rights Licensing and cofounding Titan Copyright.
