COWICHAN VALLEY, British Columbia – Award-winning Canadian blues musician Brandon Isaak has released his eighth solo album, Lookin’ Out My Window, alongside the new single “World’s Got the Blues,” through Modern Primitive Records.
The release follows the success of his 2025 album Walkin’ With the Blues, which secured three awards from five nominations at the Canadian Blues Music Awards, including Electric Blues Album of the Year, Blues Song of the Year and Blues Guitar Player of the Year.
“I came home from Toronto incredibly grateful,” Isaak says, “and then I did what I always do. I went back to work.”
The latest project combines traditional blues arrangements with contemporary songwriting, addressing social challenges, personal relationships and the importance of community.
‘World’s Got the Blues’ Addresses Economic Pressures and Social Divisions
The album’s new single, “World’s Got the Blues,” explores contemporary concerns including rising living costs, political disagreements and social tensions.
Through its lyrics, Isaak encourages understanding and cooperation, using blues music to reflect the experiences of everyday listeners.
“I believe part of my responsibility as an artist is to hold up a mirror to the world around me,” he explains. “Music can reflect what we’re going through, ask questions, challenge us, and sometimes simply remind us that we’re not the only ones feeling what we’re feeling.”
The track features prominent horn arrangements, piano accompaniment and Isaak’s distinctive vocal performance.
Personal Experiences Shape New Album
Isaak developed material for Lookin’ Out My Window through everyday observations, conversations and news events.
His songwriting also draws on family experiences, including the perspective of his 20-year-old daughter as she explores relationships and adulthood.
“For this album, I even found myself writing through my daughter’s eyes and her new adventures in love and relationships,” he says.
The musician describes songwriting as an ongoing creative process in which even unsuccessful ideas can eventually contribute to completed compositions.
The Saints of Swing Join Brandon Isaak for New Recording
Isaak collaborated with The Saints of Swing, a group of experienced musicians associated with Vancouver’s blues scene.
The recording lineup includes Darryl Havers on piano, keyboards and organ; Rob Becker on bass; Chris “The Wrist” Nordquist on drums and tambourine; Jerry Cook and Paul Wainwright on saxophones; Marty Shepard on trumpet; and Nadine States on backing vocals.
Cook, who jointly developed the horn arrangements with Isaak, received the Sax Player of the Year award at the 2025 Canadian Blues Music Awards.
Album Produced at Modern Primitive Studios
Isaak handled production, engineering and mixing at Modern Primitive Studios, maintaining creative oversight throughout the recording process.
“Every song passed through my hands from the first rough idea all the way to the final mix,” he says.
Marc L’Esperance completed mastering at heavyOsonic Studios in Vancouver.
The album also features artwork by painter David Goatley and liner notes by Dan Casavant. Isaak’s wife, Cindy Mae, coordinated the project.
