BritBox is expanding its Agatha Christie programming lineup with a contemporary adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence, a six-part mystery series set to premiere in Canada and the United States on Sept. 15.
The streaming service has released the official trailer and key art for the production, which stars Antonia Thomas, Josh Dylan and Imelda Staunton. The premiere will include the first two episodes, introducing audiences to a modern interpretation of Christie’s detective duo.
The project represents the first contemporary English-language television adaptation of the Tommy and Tuppence stories and adds another major Christie property to BritBox’s growing catalogue of British mystery programming.
Antonia Thomas and Josh Dylan Lead Contemporary Christie Adaptation
Thomas, known for The Good Doctor and Still Up, stars alongside Dylan, whose credits include The Buccaneers and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Staunton, known internationally for appearances in the Harry Potter and Paddington film franchises, also holds a starring role.
The series follows Tommy and Tuppence as their personal relationship develops alongside their work investigating mysteries. According to the production, the pair “fall in love, fall out of it, and tumble back in” while navigating a succession of cases.
The supporting cast includes Nicholas Richardson of Wu-Tang: An American Saga and Younger, Charlie Condou of Doctor Who and Unforgotten, Callie Cooke of F1 and Cheaters, and Chizzy Akudolu, whose credits include Little Disasters and The Woman in the Wall.
Six-Part Series Brings Together BritBox, Lookout Point and Agatha Christie Limited
BritBox commissioned the six-episode production, with each instalment running approximately 45 minutes. The series is produced by Lookout Point, part of BBC Studios, together with Agatha Christie Limited.
Phoebe Eclair-Powell, whose credits include The Road Trip and Harm, wrote the adaptation and serves as an executive producer. The project marks her first drama series commission for television.
Fergus O’Brien, whose previous work includes Happy Valley and The Tourist, directs the first four episodes. Ellie Heydon, known for Outrageous and Trying, directs the final two episodes. Stella Merz serves as producer.
Executive producers include Katie Draper, Laura Lankester, Louise Mutter and Juliette Howell from Lookout Point, Eclair-Powell and James Prichard from Agatha Christie Limited.
Robert Schildhouse, Jon Farrar and Stephen Nye commissioned the series on behalf of BritBox.
BBC Studios Takes Global Sales Role
BBC Studios will handle international sales for Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence, extending the commercial reach of the new production beyond its initial BritBox launch in Canada and the U.S.
The distribution arrangement builds on BBC Studios’ broader international content operation. The company reported revenues of £1.8 billion in its most recent year and profits exceeding £200 million for a third consecutive year. Its portfolio includes internationally recognized properties such as Doctor Who, Bluey, Strictly Come Dancing/Dancing with the Stars and the Planet documentary franchise.
Lookout Point, meanwhile, has developed a substantial slate of British drama. Its recent productions include Renegade Nell, the final season of Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack and A Suitable Boy. Its current commissions also include a new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice for Netflix.
BritBox Builds on Established Agatha Christie Catalogue
The arrival of Tommy & Tuppence strengthens BritBox’s existing relationship with Christie’s work. Its catalogue already includes adaptations such as Towards Zero, Murder is Easy, Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?, Poirot, Marple and The Pale Horse.
Agatha Christie Limited has managed the literary and media rights to Christie’s works worldwide since 1955. The company, managed by Christie’s great-grandson James Prichard, works across television, film, publishing, theatre and digital platforms.
For BritBox, the new production also reinforces its focus on British drama and mystery as the BBC Studios-owned streaming service competes for audiences in an increasingly crowded subscription market. BritBox currently operates across Canada, the United States, Australia and the Nordic region.
With two episodes arriving on Sept. 15, Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence will give the streamer another recognizable literary property while testing how Christie’s classic mystery storytelling translates into a contemporary television setting.
