BritBox is preparing to bring its successful British mystery series Ludwig back to North American audiences this fall, releasing the official trailer for the show’s second season and confirming several additions to its cast.
The six-episode second season will premiere on BritBox in North America on October 13, with new episodes arriving weekly. The season finale is scheduled for November 17, extending a series that has become a significant mystery title for the streaming platform since its debut.
‘Ludwig’ Season 2 Expands Mystery Storyline
The new season picks up following the events of Season 1, with master puzzle-setter John “Ludwig” Taylor, played by David Mitchell, taking on an official position as a Crime Scene Consultant.
Working alongside DCI Russell Carter, played by Dipo Ola, John will help the Cambridge Police Authority investigate a new collection of seemingly impossible crimes.
His circumstances have changed considerably since the first season. John no longer needs to impersonate his identical twin brother, James, allowing him to operate openly as himself. His unconventional puzzle-solving abilities remain central to his work, even as his difficulties navigating everyday situations continue to complicate matters.
The disappearance of James, however, remains unresolved. Now employed by the police, John is prohibited from using official resources to search for his brother or determine what James had been investigating before he vanished.
Search for James Remains Central to the Series
Despite those restrictions, John continues his investigation alongside Lucy, played by Anna Maxwell Martin. Lucy is John’s sister-in-law and the wife of his missing brother.
Their search creates an ongoing storyline alongside the individual criminal investigations expected to drive the six new episodes. While John’s original masquerade has ended, the effort to uncover the circumstances behind James’s disappearance introduces another layer of secrecy to the series.
Mitchell and Maxwell Martin return as the principal stars, while the second season introduces several new regular cast members.
Mark Bonnar and Sian Clifford Join ‘Ludwig’ Cast
Mark Bonnar, whose credits include Dept. Q and Guilt, joins the series as newspaper editor Gareth Fisher. Sian Clifford, known for Fleabag and The Ballad of Wallis Island, will play local MP Joanne Kemper.
Ben Ashenden, whose previous work includes Deep Cover and Black Mirror, has been cast as DC Ethan Cole, while After the Flood and Mutiny actor Rumi Sutton joins as DC Caitlin Sullivan.
Stephen Merchant will also make a guest appearance as Danny Sloane, described as a cocky snooker champion who finds himself at odds with John during the season’s fourth episode.
Returning cast members include Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor, Dorothy Atkinson as DCS Carol Shaw, Ralph Ineson as Chief Constable Ziegler and Karl Pilkington as DI Matt Neville.
BritBox Builds on Strong Performance of First Season
The second season follows what BritBox describes as a strong performance for the show’s debut run. According to the streaming service, Season 1 of Ludwig became the biggest mystery-genre launch in BritBox history and has ranked as the platform’s most-watched mystery season since its March 2025 premiere.
That performance gives the new season additional significance for BritBox as streaming services continue to compete for audiences through distinctive original and exclusive programming.
Big Talk Studios Returns to Produce Six-Episode Season
Ludwig was created and written by Mark Brotherhood and is produced by Big Talk Studios, part of ITV Studios, in collaboration with That Mitchell and Webb Company.
The six 60-minute episodes constitute a Big Talk Studios production in association with That Mitchell And Webb Company and a co-production with BritBox for the BBC. ITV Studios is also associated with the production and handles international distribution.
Brotherhood returns as writer for Season 2. George Kane directs episodes one through three, while Stella Corradi directs episodes four through six.
Executive producers include Kenton Allen and Toby Welch for Big Talk Studios, along with Brotherhood, David Mitchell, Kathryn O’Connor and Chris Sussman. Robert Schildhouse and Stephen Nye serve as executive producers for BritBox. Georgie Fallon is the producer, with Anya Wilson serving as co-producer.
The series was commissioned for BBC One and BBC iPlayer by BBC Director of Comedy Jon Petrie, with Gregor Sharp and Roya Eslami serving as the BBC’s commissioning editors.
With its October 13 North American premiere, Ludwig Season 2 will seek to build on the audience established by its first season while expanding both its cast and central mystery. The first season remains available to stream on BritBox.
