BritBox has unveiled additional casting for its upcoming original drama series Hercule, expanding the ensemble for the six-part adaptation that explores the origins of Agatha Christie’s famed detective, Hercule Poirot. The production, created by Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Productions, will star Edward Bluemel in the lead role and is set to begin filming soon, primarily in Liverpool.
The latest casting announcement adds several established television and film actors to the project as BritBox and the BBC continue preparations for one of the streaming platform’s most anticipated literary adaptations.
BritBox Adds High-Profile Cast to ‘Hercule’
Joining Edward Bluemel are Henry Ashton, James D’Arcy, Calvin Demba, Phil Dunning, Jack Gleeson, Tamsin Greig, James Nesbitt, Guy Remmers, Rebecca Rittenhouse and Mawaan Rizwan.
The newly announced cast brings together performers known for work across British and international television, including productions such as Oppenheimer, Supacell, Friday Night Dinner, Cold Feet, The Buccaneers, His & Hers, and Juice.
BritBox had previously confirmed Bluemel as the lead actor portraying the iconic Belgian detective, marking a fresh interpretation of one of crime fiction’s most enduring characters.
A New Look at the Origins of Hercule Poirot
Unlike previous screen adaptations centred on Poirot’s established detective career, Hercule will focus on the character’s early life and development.
The six-episode drama will chronicle the story of the world’s greatest detective and examine how he earned that reputation. Set against the backdrop of Britain between the First and Second World Wars, the series aims to combine character-driven storytelling with historical drama.
According to the production announcement, the series will adapt three of Agatha Christie’s early stories while introducing audiences to individuals who will become Poirot’s future friends, allies and one significant adversary.
The approach is designed to provide viewers with both an origin story and a broader portrait of Britain during the interwar years.
Creative Team Behind the Adaptation
Screenwriter Benji Walters has adapted the series for television. Walters is known for his work on Code of Silence, The Leopard and Obsession.
Direction will be shared across multiple production blocks. Jonny Campbell will direct the opening two episodes, while Chanya Button and Alrick Riley will oversee the remaining episodes.
Charlie Palmer serves as series producer.

Hercule is being produced by Mammoth Screen, part of ITV Studios, alongside Agatha Christie Limited.
The series has been commissioned for BritBox in North America and will also air on BBC One and stream through BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom.
Executive producers include Benji Walters and Jonny Campbell, James Prichard for Agatha Christie Limited, Rebecca Durbin and Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen, Robert Schildhouse, Jon Farrar and Stephen Nye for BritBox, and Nick Lambon for the BBC.
