Free August 13 Event Brings Racquet Sports, Live Demonstrations and Family Activities to Civic Square
CAMBRIDGE, Ont. — The City of Cambridge is encouraging residents and visitors to get active this summer with the launch of Racquet in the Square, a new community event that will transform Civic Square into a destination for sport, recreation and social connection on August 13.
Running from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Civic Square outside City Hall, the free event will introduce participants to a variety of racquet sports while highlighting local clubs and organizations that support recreational and competitive play across the region.
The initiative reflects the city’s ongoing efforts to promote active lifestyles and create engaging public spaces where people of all ages can gather. Throughout the day, visitors will have the opportunity to try sports including pickleball, badminton, table tennis, tennis and squash, regardless of their experience level.
Interactive Squash Court Headlines the Event
One of the event’s featured attractions will be an interactive squash court provided by Squash Ontario, giving participants the chance to experience the sport in a unique outdoor setting. Live demonstrations, friendly matches and hands-on activities are expected to take place throughout the day, allowing newcomers and experienced players alike to test their skills.
In addition to sporting activities, attendees can enjoy live entertainment, purchase food from local vendors and connect with organizations that promote racquet sports within the Cambridge community.
City officials say the event is designed to be welcoming and accessible, encouraging residents to discover new recreational opportunities while spending time in the city’s downtown core.
City Leaders Highlight Community Connection Through Recreation
Mayor Jan Liggett said the event offers an opportunity to strengthen community ties while introducing more people to racquet sports.
“Whether you’re a practiced player or trying a racquet sport for the first time, this event is a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together,” said Mayor Jan Liggett. “I invite residents and visitors to join for a day of activity, connection and to truly take in the Cambridge experience.”

Partnerships Help Bring Event to Life
The City is partnering with several organizations to deliver the inaugural event, including Squash Ontario, Tennis Ontario and Grand River Rapids, alongside additional community partners.
City Manager Rob Axiak said collaboration has been key to creating an event that supports recreation while showcasing Cambridge’s public spaces.
“Creating opportunities for residents to gather, be active and experience our public spaces in new ways is an important part of building a vibrant community,” said City Manager Rob Axiak. “We are grateful to Squash Ontario, Tennis Ontario, Grand River Rapids, and all our event partners for helping bring this exciting event to life.”
Organizers expect the event to appeal to families, recreational athletes and visitors looking for free activities during the summer season. Because visitors can arrive at any time during operating hours, participants have flexibility to watch demonstrations, take part in games or simply enjoy the atmosphere.
