Free August 1 Concert and Canada Day Fireworks Aim to Draw Crowds to Del Crary Park
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. — Peterborough Musicfest is preparing for one of its biggest summer evenings as the free festival combines a country music tribute concert, the delayed Canada Day fireworks display and the launch of a new youth music initiative during the Civic Holiday long weekend.
Scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1 at Del Crary Park, the event is expected to bring together residents and visitors for a full evening of live entertainment along Peterborough’s waterfront. Organizers say the program is designed to offer more than a traditional concert, combining community activities, local talent and family-friendly programming before culminating in a fireworks display over Little Lake.
The main performance begins at 8 p.m. on the Fred Anderson Stage with a tribute show featuring the music of country superstars Garth Brooks and Shania Twain. The production will showcase some of the artists’ most recognizable hits, offering audiences an evening focused on country music favourites and high-energy entertainment.
Fireworks Display Returns After Weather Delay
Following the concert, the City of Peterborough will present its Canada Day fireworks display, which was postponed from July 1 because of poor weather conditions. The fireworks are expected to provide a dramatic conclusion to the evening, lighting up the downtown waterfront over Little Lake.
Festival organizers say pairing the postponed fireworks with the Musicfest concert creates a unique opportunity for visitors to enjoy multiple attractions during one evening.
“One of the things that makes Peterborough Musicfest so special is that every concert is about more than the performance on stage,” said Tracey Randall, Executive Director of Peterborough Musicfest. “On August 1, we’re inviting people to come early, spend the evening with us and enjoy everything Del Crary Park has to offer. From discovering new music and celebrating country favourites to watching fireworks over Little Lake, it’s the perfect way to spend a summer evening in Peterborough.”
The event is part of Peterborough Musicfest’s 39th season, which continues its long-standing tradition of providing free outdoor concerts throughout the summer.
Local Talent Opens the Evening
Georgia Rose to Perform on Future Sound Series Stage
The evening’s entertainment begins at 6:30 p.m. with a performance by local emerging artist Georgia Rose as part of the Future Sound Series presented by Cogeco.
The side-stage series has become a regular feature of Wednesday and Saturday performances, giving local musicians an opportunity to perform before the festival’s headline acts while introducing audiences to new regional talent.
Festival organizers say supporting emerging performers remains an important part of Musicfest’s programming and community outreach efforts.
New Youth Program Debuts
First Note Initiative Encourages Young Musicians
Saturday’s event will also mark the official launch of First Note, a new interactive music program designed for children and youth.
Supported through funding from the Peterborough Foundation, the initiative will allow young participants to explore a variety of musical instruments in a free, hands-on setting before the evening concert begins. Organizers say the program is intended to inspire future musicians by providing an accessible introduction to music in a welcoming environment.
Additional details about the First Note program are expected to be announced later in the week.
Festival Offers Additional Ways to Support Operations
Visitors attending the event will also have several opportunities to support Peterborough Musicfest beyond attending the free concert.
Festival merchandise will be available for purchase throughout the evening, while attendees can also participate in the Musicfest 50/50 raffle or purchase a Diner’s Book. Organizers are also encouraging guests to use the Musicfest web application, which includes interactive challenges and prize opportunities designed to enhance the concert experience.
Admission to Peterborough Musicfest remains free throughout the season, supported by sponsors, donors and community partners that continue to fund one of Ontario’s longest-running outdoor music festivals.
The Aug. 1 event is expected to be among the busiest nights of the summer season as live country music, family programming and the postponed Canada Day fireworks combine to create a full evening of entertainment for residents and visitors alike.
