Self-produced release marks the first preview of Ophelie Quraishi’s debut album, arriving October 16
Ottawa-based indie rock and dream pop artist Eau the Music has unveiled “In This Silence,” the lead single from her forthcoming debut album, ‘Light in the Dark,’ scheduled for release on October 16. The project represents a significant milestone for songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Ophelie Quraishi, who independently wrote, produced and mixed the music while teaching herself the instruments used throughout the record.
The new single introduces listeners to an album rooted in themes of grief, personal transformation and self-discovery. Entirely created by Quraishi, “In This Silence” reflects the emotional uncertainty that can accompany relationships, loss and the ongoing process of understanding oneself.
According to the artist, the song first emerged unexpectedly as a voice memo featuring a simple guitar progression and melody. The phrase “in this silence, I remain” surfaced before she fully understood its significance, later becoming the emotional foundation of the track.
Finding Creative Renewal Through Loss
Meditation and reflection inspired the debut album
Quraishi began writing the songs that would become ‘Light in the Dark’ following the deaths of her father and stepmother, who passed away only months apart after prolonged illnesses. During that period, meditation became a central part of her daily life, helping her process grief while gradually opening the door to songwriting.
Without formal musical training, she found herself reconnecting with a creative side she says had been present during childhood but had faded over time. What initially served as a personal outlet for processing loss eventually evolved into a full-length debut album.
The emotional themes behind the record are reflected throughout “In This Silence,” where lyrics including “In this silence I remain,” “Love survives me once again,” and “But the lights will shine again” focus on perseverance, patience and hope during periods of uncertainty.
Rather than presenting grief as a conclusion, the song explores the emotional space between loss, healing and self-discovery, offering a message centred on resilience and acceptance.
A Fully Independent Production
Every instrument and recording completed in a home studio
One of the album’s distinguishing features is the extent of Quraishi’s independent production work. She taught herself guitar, vocals, synthesizer, bass and drum programming entirely by ear before recording the project in a home studio she assembled herself in Ottawa.
“In This Silence” also marked the first song she attempted to mix independently. The process reportedly took months as she refined the sound through experimentation rather than formal engineering techniques.
Many of the album’s arrangements feature between 50 and 200 individual audio layers, with some guitar and synthesizer performances intentionally preserved from their original recordings to retain their spontaneous character.
Growing Recognition Beyond Canada
Before launching her solo career, Quraishi released “Unfamiliar” in 2022 for her first band, First of the Last Stars. The song was written about her father during his illness and established the personal storytelling that continues throughout her latest work.
Her music has since attracted international attention. The single “Life” became the title track for ‘Back Tide,’ a UK short film produced by Hellion Films that explores themes of revenge, guilt and abuse before ultimately arriving at hope. Quraishi also contributed to the film’s score.
Her songwriting has additionally earned recognition as a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition, while her creative journey was recently highlighted by Women in Music Canada.
Album Release and Live Performances
‘Light in the Dark’ is positioned as an exploration of transformation, examining how difficult experiences can ultimately lead to healing and renewed purpose.
The debut album will be released on October 16, following the launch of “In This Silence.”
