Jumpstart-Led FIFA World Cup 2026 Legacy Project Brings New Recreation Infrastructure to West Alexander
WINNIPEG, MB — Residents of Winnipeg’s West Alexander neighbourhood are set to benefit from a new artificial turf soccer pitch at Burton Cummings Community Centre after City Council approved funding arrangements for the project, marking another investment in community recreation ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The new facility will be constructed at the community centre located at 790 Arlington Avenue and will feature a high-quality artificial turf playing surface, perimeter fencing, goals, lighting, player benches and other supporting amenities. City officials say the project is designed to expand access to recreational opportunities, organized sports programming and community activities for local residents.
The initiative forms part of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities’ FIFA World Cup 2026 legacy program, which aims to support the development of new recreational facilities in communities across Canada. The announcement also comes days after Winnipeg secured a Northern Super League franchise, bringing professional women’s soccer to the city and further boosting interest in the sport.
Community Recreation Investment Receives Multi-Partner Funding Support
City Council voted to accept a $400,000 donation from Jumpstart to advance the project. Additional funding commitments include $100,000 from the Point Douglas Land Dedication Reserve through Councillor Vivian Santos and $50,000 from Mayor Scott Gillingham. The Province of Manitoba has also indicated its intention to contribute $80,000, pending the necessary approvals.
The combined investment reflects a collaborative effort between municipal, provincial and community partners to expand recreational infrastructure in Winnipeg.
Santos Highlights Long-Term Community Benefits
Councillor Vivian Santos, who represents Point Douglas Ward and serves as Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services, described the project as a significant investment in the neighbourhood’s future.
“This is an incredible investment in our community and one that will benefit generations of children and families,” said Councillor Vivian Santos, Point Douglas Ward and Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services. “As Chair of Community Services, I believe recreation is one of the best preventative investments a city can make. Quality parks, community centres, libraries, pools, and sports facilities help improve physical and mental health, create opportunities for young people to stay active, and strengthen neighbourhoods. This soccer pitch is another step toward building healthier, more connected communities.”
Santos emphasized that recreational facilities play an important role in supporting public health, youth engagement and community development, particularly in neighbourhoods where accessible sports infrastructure can have a lasting social impact.
Growing Soccer Momentum in Winnipeg
The soccer pitch announcement arrives at a time when enthusiasm for the sport is increasing across Winnipeg and Canada more broadly. The upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be hosted across North America, has spurred investment in soccer infrastructure and participation initiatives nationwide.
Locally, the recent confirmation that Winnipeg will be home to a Northern Super League team has further strengthened the city’s soccer profile.
Mayor Scott Gillingham said the new facility will help capitalize on that momentum by providing additional opportunities for youth participation and skill development.
“The FIFA World Cup and the arrival of a Northern Super League team have created a lot of excitement around soccer in Winnipeg,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “This new pitch will help build on that by providing more opportunities for young people in West Alexander to play the game and develop their skills.”
City officials expect the facility to serve a broad range of users, including local youth, community organizations, recreational leagues and sports development programs.
Partners Recognized for Collaborative Effort
Santos also acknowledged the organizations and individuals involved in bringing the project forward.
“Projects like this don’t happen alone,” Santos added. “I want to sincerely thank Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities for choosing West Alexander, Mayor Scott Gillingham for his support, provincial participation, City administration, and all of our partners who worked together to bring this opportunity to our community.”
Next Steps and Construction Timeline
With funding approvals now in place, the City of Winnipeg will move forward with finalizing project designs, completing required agreements and developing construction plans.
A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for August 2026, with additional details regarding construction timelines and project milestones expected to be released as planning progresses.
Once completed, the new artificial turf soccer pitch is expected to enhance recreational capacity in West Alexander and provide a modern, year-round facility that supports both community programming and organized sport, reinforcing Winnipeg’s broader efforts to expand access to quality recreation infrastructure.
