Cinematic New Single Introduces Conceptual Album Inspired by the Kardashev Scale
Danish progressive metal band KINETIC has released an ambitious new music video and single, “Evolution,” offering listeners an early glimpse into the band’s upcoming debut full-length album, Liminal, scheduled for release on October 16, 2026 through Eclipse Records.
The 11-minute video marks the first of three planned visual releases tied to the album and showcases the Kolding-based group’s commitment to combining technical musicianship with cinematic storytelling. Directed by the band’s synthesizer player, Marcus H. Levin, the production blends performance footage with sweeping travel cinematography filmed in remote locations including Africa, Siberut Island and the volcanic terrain surrounding Dukono.
The release arrives as progressive metal continues to embrace expansive concepts and long-form compositions, with KINETIC positioning itself among a new generation of artists focused on immersive audiovisual experiences rather than conventional song structures.
‘Evolution’ Explores Humanity, Nature and the Origins of Life
Visual Storytelling Anchored by Contrasting Natural Landscapes
Rather than following a traditional narrative format, “Evolution” presents a visual interpretation of the origins of existence. The video guides viewers through themes ranging from the birth of the cosmos and the formation of Earth to the emergence of human life and expression.
Throughout the film, environmental contrasts play a central role. Scenes transition between deep space, oceans, frozen landscapes and deserts, creating a visual framework that mirrors the song’s philosophical themes.
A carefully structured colour palette further reinforces the concept. Blue imagery is used to symbolize mystery, creation and tranquility, while red tones represent conflict, danger and chaos. The interplay between the two colours illustrates the tension and transformation that shape both natural and human evolution.
Explaining the creative vision behind the project, keyboardist Marcus H. Levin said:
“Evolution is just the second track on our album, so according to the album timeline of the Kardashev scale, it is reaching far beyond where the album actually is on the timeline” explains keyboardist Marcus. “Evolution represents the broader essence of what we want to communicate, giving us the opportunity to explore evolution not solely as a subject within the album, but as a universal idea connected to life, humanity, nature and ourselves as artists. At its core, we hope the song and video will remind people how extraordinary life on Earth is. The oceans, landscapes, animals, human connection and the simple fact that we exist at all. Evolution is our connection between humanity and nature, past and present, destruction and creation. We also want to show how fragile everything can be; life, nature, ecosystems and humanity itself. The video contrasts beauty with destruction and there is always a tension between harmony and chaos.”
Debut Album Liminal Expands the Band’s Conceptual Ambitions
106-Minute Release Builds on the Success of 2025 EP Sentience
While “Evolution” serves as a standalone statement, it is also a key component of Liminal, a 106-minute conceptual album that represents a significant step forward for the Danish quintet following its 2025 debut EP, Sentience.
The album is built around the Kardashev Scale, a theoretical framework developed by astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev to classify civilizations according to their ability to harness and utilize energy. KINETIC uses this scientific concept as the foundation for a broader narrative exploring technological advancement, humanity’s place in the universe and the future of civilization.
Unlike many contemporary metal releases that rely on predictable verse-and-chorus structures, Liminal emphasizes long-form compositions and evolving arrangements. The approach allows the music to develop gradually while supporting the album’s expansive thematic scope.
The project was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Frederik Uglebjerg, whose previous work includes collaborations with Galge, MØL, Trold and Isbjörg. Album artwork was created by Lasse H. Görlitz and Marcus H. Levin.
Track Listing Highlights Conceptual Journey
The album’s 11 tracks are designed to function as interconnected chapters within a larger narrative:
- Beginnings
- Evolution
- New Frontiers
- Type 0.75
- Fermi
- Progress to One
- Dyson
- Journey to the Stars
- Digital Mind
- 2 to Five
- Omega
