Award-winning Montréal singer-songwriter explores passion, intimacy and commitment across three-track collection
Montréal-based singer-songwriter Silka Weil has released her sophomore EP, Midnight Blue, marking a new chapter in the artist’s evolving career and showcasing a deeper exploration of love, vulnerability and personal growth.
The new EP, now available on streaming platforms, follows Weil’s acclaimed 2023 debut and arrives after a period of growing recognition for the Musi-Flo Artist of the Year. Built around the themes of passion, intimacy and commitment, Midnight Blue presents a collection of songs that blend rock-driven energy with reflective storytelling.
Weil, known for balancing emotional honesty with alternative rock influences, wrote every song on the EP. Longtime collaborator Jean-Sébastien Brault-Labbé handled arrangements, instrumentation, production, mixing and mastering at Montréal’s Studio de la Ruelle, continuing a creative partnership that has become central to the artist’s sound.
Lead single showcases a more aggressive and theatrical side
The EP rollout began with “Make Me Lose Control,” a track designed to capture the intensity of a live performance. The song combines forceful rock-oriented verses and choruses with a more restrained and intimate bridge, creating a contrast that drives its emotional impact.
Recorded at Studio de la Ruelle, the single reflects a spontaneous creative process. Weil completed the song’s third verse while in the studio, and a late production decision to introduce live drums after the bridge added additional momentum and energy to the final recording.
The result is a song that embraces tension and urgency while highlighting the artist’s willingness to experiment with dynamics and arrangement.
‘Forever’ reflects stability and lasting commitment
In contrast to the confrontational tone of “Make Me Lose Control,” the EP’s second single, “Forever,” focuses on security, trust and enduring partnership.
Written in the lead-up to Weil’s 2023 wedding, the song draws inspiration from the honeymoon she and her partner were planning at the time. Travel imagery serves as a recurring motif, contrasting temporary excitement with the permanence of long-term commitment.
Rather than presenting love as an escape, the song portrays it as a dependable foundation built through shared experiences. The track highlights a softer side of Weil’s songwriting while maintaining the emotional depth that characterizes the EP as a whole.
Title track explores forgiveness, memory and personal change
The emotional centrepiece of the project is the title track, “Midnight Blue,” which examines betrayal, forgiveness and the lasting effects of life-changing mistakes.
Through maritime imagery that references shipwrecks, open waters and the recurring refrain “out in the midnight blue,” Weil reflects on how individuals and relationships evolve after difficult experiences. The song raises questions about accountability, healing and reconciliation without offering simple conclusions.
Instead of focusing solely on heartbreak, “Midnight Blue” traces a journey toward understanding and compassion. The track suggests that forgiveness is not the erasure of painful memories but a conscious decision to move forward despite them.
Its reflective tone helps anchor the EP’s broader message that love exists in both joyful and challenging moments.
Growing recognition beyond Canada
Since releasing her debut project in 2023, Weil has steadily expanded her audience both domestically and internationally.
Among her recent achievements are receiving Musi-Flo’s Artist of the Year honour, appearing on the cover of radiodowntown.ca in July 2025, making a guest appearance on The Perfect Note with John K, and participating in a live interview with Mexico-based media outlet Ella Suena.
Her music has also reached audiences through radio airplay and live performances across Canada, including appearances in Banff, Kingston and Montréal. Internationally, she has performed in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, helping establish a growing presence outside her home market.
Often drawing comparisons to PJ Harvey, Norah Jones, Alanis Morissette and Lana Del Rey, Weil continues to develop a style that combines alternative rock textures with emotionally nuanced songwriting.
A portrait of love in all its complexities
With Midnight Blue, Weil delivers a project that resists simple classifications of either happiness or heartbreak. Instead, the EP presents love as a multifaceted experience shaped by passion, vulnerability, conflict and forgiveness.
By pairing intimate storytelling with confident rock arrangements, the Montréal artist offers what may be her most complete artistic statement to date—one that captures the complexity of human relationships and the emotional shades that exist between certainty and doubt.
