Toronto festival attracts global crime-writing talent while TIFA previews major author events for 2026
The MOTIVE Crime & Mystery Festival concluded its fifth edition on June 7, capping off what organizers described as the largest and most successful festival in its history. Over three days, the Toronto-based event welcomed more than 50 crime and mystery writers from Canada and abroad, drawing strong audience engagement through a mix of author discussions, workshops, masterclasses, and immersive literary experiences.
Presented by the Toronto International Festival of Authors (TIFA), the festival has become a prominent platform for crime and mystery literature, bringing together established and emerging voices from across the genre. The 2026 edition featured a diverse lineup of programming that highlighted both Canadian and international perspectives on crime writing.
Among the festival’s key attractions was the Canada Bleeds panel, which examined the evolution of Canadian crime fiction and its growing influence within the broader literary landscape. The event also featured a series of sold-out masterclasses led by some of the genre’s most recognized authors, offering attendees unique opportunities to gain insights into the craft of crime and mystery writing.
The festival’s expanded programming included showcases dedicated to French-language crime writing, forensic science workshops, and interactive mystery-themed experiences that attracted enthusiastic audiences throughout the weekend. Organizers noted that the combination of educational programming and audience participation contributed to the event’s strongest attendance figures since its launch.
TIFA Continues Literary Engagement Beyond Festival Season
While the conclusion of MOTIVE marks the end of another successful festival, TIFA is already turning its attention to a slate of upcoming literary events scheduled throughout the year.
Through its TIFA Presents series, the organization continues to host conversations with internationally recognized authors, cultural figures, and influential voices across literature and current affairs. The initiative is designed to maintain engagement with readers beyond TIFA’s annual festival programming while providing audiences with access to major literary figures visiting Canada.
One of the most anticipated events on the 2026 calendar is an appearance by acclaimed novelist Maggie O’Farrell on June 28 at TIFF Lightbox. Presented in partnership with TIFF and Penguin Random House Canada, the event will serve as the exclusive Canadian launch of Land: A Novel, O’Farrell’s latest work of fiction and one of the year’s most anticipated book releases.
During the event, O’Farrell will discuss the new novel, her creative process, and her collaboration with filmmaker Chloé Zhao on the adaptation of Hamnet for the screen. The conversation will be moderated by bestselling author and journalist Claire Cameron.
Another major literary event is scheduled for September 22, when bestselling author Rebecca F. Kuang will appear at Toronto’s Winter Garden Theatre. Kuang will discuss her latest contemporary fiction novel, Taipei Story, offering audiences an opportunity to hear directly from one of the most influential voices in contemporary literature.
Fall Festival Returns This October
TIFA’s flagship Fall Festival is also set to return from October 28 to November 1, 2026. The annual event will once again bring together acclaimed authors, emerging literary voices, and thought leaders for five days of readings, conversations, and special programming.
Organizers say additional programming details and author announcements will be released in the coming months as preparations continue for the festival.
The continued expansion of year-round programming reflects TIFA’s broader mission of fostering literary engagement and supporting storytelling in Canada and internationally.
