Ontario Roots Trio Expands Its Sound With String-Led Ballad and International Collaboration
Ontario-based Blues-Americana-Country trio The Sling Sisters have released a new single, “The Reason,” marking a stylistic shift for the group as it continues to build momentum following the release of its debut album earlier this year.
The Cambridge and Toronto-based act, known for its harmony-driven blend of Blues, Americana and Alt-Country, launched the single alongside the announcement of an extensive 2026 touring schedule across Ontario and Quebec. The release follows the band’s January 2026 debut album What I Hope to Find, which introduced the trio to wider Canadian and international audiences with its Nashville-inspired sound and roots-focused songwriting.
While previous material leaned heavily into upbeat country swagger and groove-oriented arrangements, “The Reason” takes a more restrained and intimate direction. Built around strings, acoustic instrumentation and layered harmonies, the track centres on themes of vulnerability, emotional certainty and personal connection.
New Single Highlights Emotional Depth and International Production Team
Written by Elana Harte and Kim Jarrett, “The Reason” features lead vocals from Suzie Burmester and brings together musicians from four countries. The recording includes drums by Chris Barber of Sheffield, England, bass by Bruno Migliari of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, electric guitars by Vitaliy Tkachuk of Odesa, Ukraine, acoustic guitar by Harte in Toronto, and cello by Ben Trigg in London.
The cello arrangement plays a defining role in the track’s atmosphere, adding orchestral depth uncommon within contemporary roots-based recordings. The song also reflects the production style that has become associated with Harte’s work, emphasizing spatial arrangement and layered instrumentation to create a fuller analogue-inspired sound.
The single’s emotional centre arrives in Burmester’s vocal performance, particularly during the track’s lyrical transition from skepticism to conviction.
“I could’ve lived my life in black and white / But you looked at me / Took me absolutely by surprise / And I can see / I was pretty sure I had it right / But now I know.”
The song opens from a place of uncertainty before gradually moving toward emotional clarity. Early lyrics frame the narrator’s disbelief in ideas such as fate or destiny:
“There are just so many things / That I can’t believe in / Like wishes, prayers, and fairy tales / That everything has a reason,”
before resolving in the chorus:
“You, you are the reason.”
The arrangement allows those lyrical shifts to unfold gradually, avoiding dramatic production flourishes in favour of understated instrumentation and harmony work.
Trio’s Origins Rooted in Ontario Live Music Community
The Sling Sisters trace their beginnings to an impromptu performance in Kitchener, Ont., where Harte and Burmester first formally collaborated after years of moving within overlapping music circles in Montreal. According to the band’s background story, Harte’s regular duo partner became unavailable for a performance, leading Burmester to fill in, while Kelly Mulholland joined from the audience during the set.
The resulting chemistry became the foundation of the trio’s signature sound, built around tightly arranged three-part harmonies and roots-oriented songwriting.
Since forming, the band has steadily developed a following throughout Ontario and Quebec through community-focused live performances and festival appearances. Their music blends Blues, Americana and Alt-Country influences while maintaining a distinctly Canadian independent roots identity.
Debut Album Helped Establish National Profile
The release of What I Hope to Find earlier this year helped elevate the group’s profile within Canada’s independent roots music scene. The album received coverage from outlets including Canadian Beats, Roots Music Canada, Cashbox Canada, The Table Read Magazine UK, and The Path Radio.
Its lead single, “Chasing Whiskey With A Kiss,” featured high-profile session musicians including Buddy Hyatt of TOTO on keyboards and Nashville guitarist Brent Mason, helping introduce the group to broader audiences outside Canada.
With “The Reason,” however, the band moves away from the larger Nashville production aesthetic in favour of a quieter and more reflective approach.
The release demonstrates a broader creative range for the trio, balancing the energy of their earlier work with a more restrained emotional tone.
