Ontario Premier Highlights Themes of Faith, Compassion and Unity During Sacred Islamic Holiday
TORONTO — Ontario Premier Doug Ford has issued a message recognizing the beginning of Eid al-Adha, offering greetings to Muslim communities across the province and internationally as families gather to mark one of the most significant holidays in the Islamic calendar.
In a statement released Monday by the Premier’s Office, Ford acknowledged the importance of the religious observance and emphasized the values associated with the occasion, including faith, sacrifice, gratitude and generosity.
“At sunset, Muslims in Ontario and around the world will gather with family and friends to observe the beginning of Eid al-Adha — a sacred holiday in the Muslim calendar,” Ford said.
Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, coincides with the conclusion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The holiday commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, before being provided with a ram to sacrifice instead.
Premier Emphasizes Community and Support During Global Challenges
Message Focuses on Reflection and Helping Those in Need
Ford’s statement highlighted the broader social and spiritual significance of the holiday, describing it as a time for reflection and community connection.
“Eid al-Adha marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, and it is a time to reflect on the values of faith, sacrifice, gratitude and generosity. It is an opportunity for families, friends and communities to come together in prayer and celebration while extending compassion and support to those in need,” the premier said.
Across Ontario, Muslim families are expected to gather for communal prayers, festive meals and charitable giving as part of the celebrations. Many communities also use the occasion to support local food banks, shelters and humanitarian initiatives, reflecting the charitable traditions associated with the holiday.
The premier also referenced ongoing global conflicts and humanitarian crises, noting that the message of Eid al-Adha carries particular significance during periods of uncertainty and hardship.
“At a time when many people around the world are facing conflict and hardship, the message of peace, compassion and unity at the heart of Eid al-Adha serves as an important reminder for us all,” Ford stated.

Ford concluded his message by extending well wishes on behalf of the provincial government.
“On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I wish everyone marking the occasion a joyful and prosperous Eid al-Adha.
Eid Mubarak!”
