Redeveloped facility supports province’s long-term care expansion strategy and creates local jobs
The Ontario government is marking the opening of the new Broadview Nursing Home in Smiths Falls, a redeveloped long-term care facility that adds 128 modern beds to the community as part of the province’s broader effort to expand and modernize long-term care infrastructure.
The project, supported through Ontario’s construction funding subsidy top-up program, is part of the government’s long-term care expansion strategy outlined in the 2026 Ontario Budget: A Plan to Protect Ontario. Provincial officials say the redevelopment will improve access to quality care for seniors while creating jobs and strengthening local health-care capacity in Eastern Ontario.
“Our government is investing over $236 billion in our plan to build hospitals, long-term care, roads, schools and other critical infrastructure so we can create good-paying jobs, protect workers and connect families to the high-quality care that they deserve,” said Doug Ford. “Today’s announcement means 128 residents in Smiths Falls and eastern Ontario will have access to a world-class long-term care home for decades to come.”
Modern Design Focused on Resident Comfort and Care
The redeveloped Broadview Nursing Home was designed to provide a more modern and community-oriented environment for residents. The one-storey facility is organized into four “resident home areas,” each accommodating up to 32 residents with dedicated dining and activity spaces, lounges and bedrooms intended to create a more familiar living setting.
Facility Includes Community and Wellness Spaces
The home also features several amenities aimed at improving residents’ quality of life, including a multi-purpose room, multi-faith space, café, hair salon and three secure outdoor courtyards. The courtyards include walking paths, garden planters and family-friendly gathering areas.
Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, Ontario’s Minister of Long-Term Care, described the opening as part of the province’s continuing effort to improve care access across Ontario.
“The opening of the new Broadview Nursing Home marks another major milestone in our government’s plan to protect residents and increase access to world-class health care across the province,” said Natalia Kusendova-Bashta. “The new home will bring accessible quality of care to the Smiths Falls community, and with construction now complete, 128 residents will have a safe and modern place to call home.”
The facility welcomed its first residents in December 2025 and replaces both the former Broadview Nursing Centre in Smiths Falls and the Hilltop Manor Nursing Home in Merrickville.
Project Expected to Support Regional Employment
In addition to increasing long-term care capacity, the project is expected to contribute to the local economy through job creation.
According to the province, construction of the facility generated approximately 210 local jobs. The completed home will support about 170 ongoing positions in areas including nursing, personal support work, nutrition services, administration and recreational programming.
John Jordan, MPP for Lanark—Frontenac—Kingston, said the redevelopment represents an important milestone for the region.
“The Broadview Nursing Home redevelopment in Smiths Falls marks another step toward achieving our commitment to build 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds across the province. Today’s milestone holds great significance for Lanark County, with this beautiful facility providing a brand-new home for 128 residents, near their family and friends. This government’s investment signifies our continued commitment to provide care and support to our local community.”
Local Leaders Welcome Additional Long-Term Care Capacity
Municipal and regional leaders said the new facility will help meet the growing needs of an aging population while easing pressure on local hospitals and health-care services.
“The opening of additional long-term care beds in our community is welcome news. This is another positive step to take pressure off the hospital system and give people the appropriate level of care. Congratulations to the team at Broadview, Smiths Falls and the Province for this important initiative.”
The statement was issued by Richard Kidd, Warden of Lanark County.
Smiths Falls Mayor Shawn Pankow said the new home reflects the community’s commitment to supporting seniors and maintaining strong health-care services.
“The new Broadview Nursing Home is a shining example of the exceptional quality of life that can be provided in a long-term care facility. With an aging population, and a need for assisted living with 24-hour nursing care, we cannot put a price on the value of having this 128-bed nursing home in our community. Smiths Falls is a community that cares deeply about all our citizens, and it is reassuring to know that continuum of care will remain strong throughout our lives due to the outstanding staff at this facility and the investment from the Province of Ontario.”
Province Continues Long-Term Care Expansion Campaign
The Broadview project forms part of Ontario’s broader commitment to build and redevelop 58,000 long-term care beds across the province.
As of April 2026, the province said 165 long-term care projects representing 26,421 new or redeveloped beds are either completed, under construction or approved to begin construction.
Ontario officials noted that the province continues to advance projects through its 2025 Long-Term Care Home Capital Funding Policy and Capital Funding Program, which replaced earlier construction funding subsidy initiatives introduced in 2022.
Jim Parsons, president of Broadview Nursing Centre, said the project was designed to support residents, families and staff alike.
“The opening of the new Broadview Nursing Home is a meaningful milestone for our residents, families, staff and the Smiths Falls community. This project brings together Broadview Nursing Centre and Hilltop Manor in a new, purpose-built home that was designed to be comfortable, welcoming and supportive for residents. We are grateful to the Government of Ontario, the Town of Smiths Falls, our project partners, and especially our staff, whose commitment for our residents made this transition possible and continues to shape the care provided in the home every day.”
