Regional Winners to Compete at Astoria Pub on March 28
VANCOUVER — Four emerging metal acts from across British Columbia are set to compete in the BC semi-final of the Wacken Metal Battle Canada 2026, as the international band competition advances toward its national stage. The event, presented by The Invisible Orange, will take place March 28 at Astoria Pub in Vancouver.
Following a series of regional rounds, four bands—Circle of Titans, Crüzer, Dead After Dark, and Empalement—have secured their spots in the BC semi-final, representing Metro Vancouver, the BC Interior, and Vancouver Island.
Metro Vancouver Acts Bring Diverse Metal Sounds
Metro Vancouver’s finalists include Circle of Titans and Crüzer, each bringing distinct stylistic approaches to the competition.
Circle of Titans, which won Metro Vancouver round 1, describes its sound as “Progressive, psychedelic, and sludgy alternative metal from the mountaintops.” The band has built a following for its atmospheric compositions and genre-blending approach.
Crüzer, winner of Metro Vancouver round 2, takes a more theatrical direction, leaning into a high-energy, cosmic-themed identity. The band states: “EARTHLINGS!!! Prepare for a cosmic thrashing assault! Cruzer is a ragtag group of intergalactic rebels hellbent on crafting the sickest tunes for cruzing down the interstellar highway. Featuring the celestial vocals of Eric Willmott, the duelling cosmic shreddage of Ben Higgins & Nico Miraftab, and the planet-crushing rhythm section of Alex Gain (drums) and Esteban Lleuful (bass), their debut EP, “Look to the Skies,” is available on all streaming platforms and Bandcamp now!”
The inclusion of two Metro Vancouver acts highlights the depth of talent in the region’s metal scene, which continues to produce bands with both technical proficiency and strong branding.
Interior and Island Bands Add Competitive Edge
Representing the BC Interior is Dead After Dark, a modern metalcore band from the Okanagan that blends heavy breakdowns with melodic elements. The group has shared stages with a wide range of acts, including Floodgate, Opal In Sky, and Salem Trials, building a reputation for high-intensity performances.
Dead After Dark states: “Dead After Dark is a modern metalcore band hailing from the Okanagan, BC. Consisting of Lance MacBain and Lisa Calfa, the band blends heavy breakdowns, melodic clean choruses, and crushing riffs to create an intense, yet dynamic sound. Drawing inspiration from bands like Spiritbox, Make Them Suffer, and After the Burial, Dead After Dark crafts music that pushes the boundaries of metalcore while maintaining a deeply emotional and powerful atmosphere.”
From Vancouver Island, Empalement rounds out the semi-final lineup. Based in Victoria, the band draws heavily from second-wave black metal while incorporating elements of death and grind.
Empalement describes its sound as: “Empalement is an extreme metal band from Victoria, BC, Canada. Inspired heavily by second-wave black metal, their sound also draws from death, grind, and other forms of extreme music, combining unholy aggression with a dark, cinematic atmosphere.”
Pathway to National and International Stages
The BC semi-final is a critical step in the Canadian leg of the Wacken Metal Battle, which ultimately sends one winning band to perform at the globally recognized Wacken Open Air festival in Germany. The competition is known for spotlighting emerging talent and offering international exposure to independent metal acts.
For promoters and industry observers, events like the BC semi-final serve as both a showcase of regional talent and a barometer of evolving trends within Canada’s heavy music sector. The diversity of styles represented—from progressive and psychedelic metal to metalcore and black metal—underscores the genre’s continued innovation and audience appeal.
Event Details and Industry Significance
The March 28 event at Astoria Pub is expected to draw local fans, industry professionals, and supporters of the competing bands. With each act bringing a distinct sound and stage presence, the semi-final is positioned as both a competitive event and a celebration of British Columbia’s metal scene.
As Canada’s music industry continues to diversify, niche competitions like Wacken Metal Battle Canada play a key role in connecting grassroots artists with global opportunities, reinforcing the country’s presence in the international heavy music landscape.
