CHARLOTTETOWN — A popular community initiative aimed at supporting local restaurants while giving parents a night off is returning to Charlottetown for another season.
Discover Charlottetown announced the return of its “Parents Dine Out” program this week, offering free childcare programming on Friday evenings throughout March and April. The initiative is designed to encourage residents to dine at local restaurants during the late winter and early spring shoulder season, traditionally a slower period for the hospitality industry.
Now in its third year, the program officially launches Friday and will run every Friday evening through the end of April. Organizers say the initiative has become one of the city’s most anticipated community programs, combining support for local businesses with family-friendly services.
The program provides supervised children’s programming run by Active Islanders, allowing parents, grandparents or friends to enjoy a meal at participating Charlottetown restaurants while their children take part in an evening of organized activities and games.
Parents can participate by reserving a childcare spot in advance, dining at one of the participating restaurants and presenting their same-night restaurant receipt when they return to pick up their child.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy by Discover Charlottetown to help sustain economic activity in the city’s downtown and hospitality sectors during the shoulder season, when tourism numbers are typically lower.
Local restaurants often face slower business during late winter and early spring, making programs that encourage residents to dine out particularly valuable for the industry. By combining a night out for parents with free childcare programming, the initiative aims to remove barriers that might otherwise prevent families from dining at local establishments.
The return of Parents Dine Out also coincides with a broader series of seasonal promotions and events designed to drive both local participation and regional tourism.
Among them is the Stay 2, Get $75 hotel promotion, which encourages overnight stays in the city by offering incentives for hotel bookings. Other attractions include Glow Skates at Founders’ Food Hall & Market, Art Fest at The Arts Hotel, and Spa Day in the City at Modo Yoga Charlottetown.
Discover Charlottetown is also promoting the city through its Spring Fever campaign, targeting drive markets across the Maritime provinces. The campaign is intended to attract visitors from nearby regions looking for short spring getaways, while also encouraging local residents to explore events and experiences in their own city.
In addition to the seasonal promotions, a number of major events are scheduled in the coming weeks that organizers say will further help drive traffic to local businesses.
Upcoming highlights include expanded St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, the PEI Beer Festival, Polar Pride Fest, the PEI Festival of Wines and the Spring Atlantic Maker Market. Another major draw expected later in the season is the annual PEI Burger Love campaign, a well-known culinary promotion that typically attracts significant participation from restaurants across the province.
Together, these initiatives form part of a coordinated effort to maintain economic momentum in Charlottetown during the quieter months before the summer tourism season begins.
Programs like Parents Dine Out not only support restaurants directly through increased dining traffic, but also help reinforce the city’s reputation as a vibrant community hub with regular events and activities for residents and visitors alike.
By encouraging residents to explore local dining options and participate in seasonal events, Discover Charlottetown hopes to generate broader economic benefits for the city’s hospitality, retail and tourism sectors.
