TORONTO — Prime Video says its upcoming Spanish-language drama The House of the Spirits, based on the celebrated novel by Isabel Allende, will debut globally on April 29, marking a major international release for the streaming platform as competition intensifies for premium scripted content.
The announcement came during the 76th edition of the Berlinale Film Festival, where the highly anticipated adaptation was unveiled ahead of its worldwide rollout in more than 240 countries and territories.
The eight-episode series represents the first Spanish-language television adaptation of Allende’s landmark novel, which has sold millions of copies worldwide and is widely regarded as a defining work of Latin American literature.
Prime Video said the multigenerational drama traces the lives of three women—Clara, Blanca and Alba—over roughly 50 years in an unnamed South American country. The story unfolds against a backdrop of social inequality, political unrest and elements of magical realism, themes that helped establish Allende’s global literary reputation.
The series is positioned as a prestige international production for Prime Video, part of the company’s broader strategy to expand its slate of original programming beyond English-language markets and attract global subscribers with regionally produced stories that have worldwide appeal.
The cast is led by Mexican actor Alfonso Herrera, known for his role in Rebel Moon, who portrays the patriarch Esteban Trueba. Nicole Wallace and Dolores Fonzi share the role of Clara del Valle at different stages of her life. The ensemble also includes Fernanda Castillo as Férula, Aline Kuppenheim as Nivea del Valle and Eduard Fernández as Severo del Valle.
Additional cast members include Sara Becker and Fernanda Urrejola as Blanca, Rochi Hernández as Alba, Juan Pablo Raba as Tío Marcos, and Pablo Macaya and Nicolás Contreras portraying Pedro Tercero.
The production brings together prominent creative and production talent from across the Americas. Allende serves as an executive producer alongside actor and producer Eva Longoria and Courtney Saladino. The showrunners include Francisca Alegría, Fernanda Urrejola and Andrés Wood, each with extensive experience in Latin American film and television.
The series is produced by FilmNation Entertainment, the Academy Award-winning studio behind films such as Anora and Conclave. Chilean production company Fabula, which won an Oscar for A Fantastic Woman, is also supporting the project.
For Prime Video, the release underscores its investment in global storytelling as streaming services compete to differentiate themselves with original programming. The platform has increasingly expanded its international productions in recent years, mirroring a broader industry shift as audiences demonstrate growing interest in non-English-language content.
The streaming service operates in Canada as part of the Prime membership bundle, offering subscribers access to original series, licensed programming and live sports. In addition to international productions, its Canadian lineup includes exclusive sports rights such as Prime Monday Night Hockey, along with add-on subscriptions to domestic broadcasters including Sportsnet, Crave and STACKTV.
Prime Video describes itself as “a one-stop entertainment destination offering customers a vast collection of premium programming in one application available across thousands of devices.”
Beyond original productions, the platform offers Canadian viewers the ability to rent or purchase films through its digital store and access additional features such as behind-the-scenes content via its X-Ray function.
The launch of The House of the Spirits adds to a growing roster of high-profile series on the platform, including big-budget fantasy dramas and action franchises, as global streaming companies continue investing heavily in original content to retain and grow their subscriber bases.
The adaptation’s global rollout following its Berlinale debut signals confidence in the project’s international appeal, particularly given the enduring popularity of Allende’s novel.
With its blend of family drama, political history and magical realism, the series is expected to draw viewers familiar with the book as well as new audiences, strengthening Prime Video’s presence in the competitive global streaming market.
