The Government of Angola has inaugurated a new FIFA-standard stadium in the northern province of Uíge, marking a major milestone in the country’s long-term strategy to invest in youth development, sports excellence, and community growth. Delivered by Swiss-based Mitrelli Group, the 10,000-seat Uíge Stadium meets international standards set by FIFA, UEFA, and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), positioning Angola as a rising force in sports infrastructure across Africa.
The inauguration, held in conjunction with celebrations of Angola’s 50th Independence, was presided over by H.E. Rui Falcão Pinto de Andrade, Minister of Youth and Sports, alongside H.E. José Carvalho da Rocha, Governor of Uíge Province, and other senior government officials. The event underscored Angola’s commitment to empowering young people and expanding opportunities for participation in sport at all levels.
A Pillar of National Sports Development
The new stadium comes just one month after the launch of the José Armando Sayovo Olympic and Paralympic Sports Complex in Bengo—another Mitrelli-delivered project completed six months ahead of schedule. Together, the two developments reflect the government’s ambitious pre-Olympic infrastructure strategy designed to prepare athletes for international competition while promoting education, inclusion, and civic engagement through sport.
“What we inaugurate today is more than a stadium. It is a symbol, a commitment, and a firm step toward building a future where sports, youth, and Angolan talent walk hand in hand. These facilities were built to create dignified conditions for sports practice, fostering the promotion of talent and strengthening social cohesion,” said Minister Rui Falcão Pinto de Andrade.
Built to Global Standards, Designed for Community Impact
The Uíge Stadium was designed as a multi-purpose complex capable of hosting football, athletics, and community events. The facility features a 105×68-metre natural grass pitch, a six-lane athletics track, modern locker rooms, warm-up areas, a medical unit, and accessibility features throughout.
Supporting media operations, the complex includes a dedicated press centre, TV and radio studios, and a 50-seat conference room. Commercial spaces located beneath the stands are expected to generate year-round economic activity, providing retail and hospitality opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
Mitrelli’s teams in Angola collaborated with local architects, engineers, and skilled workers to deliver the project, creating over 800 direct and indirect jobs during construction.
