MONTREAL, Canadian author Russell Brooks is preparing to launch his sixth thriller, The Cadmus Imperative, at a Montreal literary event on November 29, bringing an Afro-Caribbean perspective to the espionage genre while marking a significant milestone in Barbados’ history.
The book launch will take place at Union United Church following a Barbados Independence Day church service. Hosted by Cynthia Waithe, president of Barbados House Montreal, the event will feature readings and a question-and-answer session with Brooks.
The occasion coincides with celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of Barbados’ independence and the fifth anniversary of the Caribbean nation becoming a republic on November 30.
The Cadmus Imperative Brings Caribbean Perspectives to Espionage Fiction
The Cadmus Imperative is the fourth instalment in Brooks’ Ridley Fox/Nita Parris series, continuing the adventures of two covert CIA officers confronting international conspiracies and institutional wrongdoing.
Set primarily in Barbados, the novel unfolds eight months after the events of The Demeter Code. Its storyline begins when a surveillance operation in Istanbul is compromised by a former CIA case officer and escaped convict.
The investigation takes a personal turn when Dr. Nita Parris receives information from an investigative journalist linking her origins to a Nazi-era project in Barbados allegedly sanctioned by the United States government.
Accompanied by Ridley Fox, Parris returns to her homeland to investigate her family history, uncovering a conspiracy involving political secrecy, betrayal and revenge.
Brooks said the novel challenges conventional portrayals of international intelligence operations.
“Whenever we bring up spy thrillers, we often think about secret agents who must thwart the machinations of foreign powers from attacking the USA. We rarely think of the horrors these agencies inflicted on innocent foreigners in other countries under the pretext of national security,” said Brooks.
Political Themes Explore Racism, Intelligence Agencies and Justice
The novel combines fictional espionage with themes of institutional racism, government accountability and abuses of authority.
Brooks drew partial inspiration from the experiences of Jeffrey Sterling, a former CIA case officer who filed a discrimination complaint against the agency and was subsequently convicted under the Espionage Act.
The author uses these themes to examine the challenges individuals may face when confronting powerful institutions.
“Victims of racism can never expect to get justice in a systemically racist system,” said Brooks. “Especially when we have leaders who deny its existence to distract us from the fact they want to maintain it.”
The Cadmus Imperative also introduces a two-book narrative arc scheduled to conclude with The Cadmus Cipher in 2027.
