GRIMSBY, Ontario, October 8, 2026 — The Ontario government has awarded a major construction contract for the new Grimsby GO Station, advancing plans to expand regional rail service across Niagara and improve transportation connections with Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area.
The station, scheduled for completion in the second half of 2027, is expected to reduce travel times to the nearest GO Transit station by up to 30 minutes. The project forms part of Ontario’s broader investment in transit infrastructure aimed at easing congestion, supporting employment and strengthening regional economic activity.
Kenaidan Murphy Joint Venture has secured the construction contract. The project will also become the first GO Transit station developed using Ontario’s new standardized station design, intended to lower construction costs and accelerate delivery.
Grimsby GO Station to Improve Niagara Region Transit Connections
The new station will support expanded service along the Lakeshore West corridor, improving rail accessibility for residents travelling between Niagara Region, Hamilton and Toronto.
“Grimsby GO will be a game changer for Niagara, bringing fast, reliable GO service closer to home, saving commuters valuable time and unlocking increased service along the Lakeshore West line,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “We’re building the transportation infrastructure Ontario needs to support growing communities, create good-paying jobs and build a stronger, more competitive economy.”
Preliminary site preparation began earlier in 2026, including tree and vegetation removal. Construction activities now include site grading, followed by excavation and work on the platform foundations.
New Station to Include Parking, Bus Connections and Passenger Facilities
The station will feature a rail platform equipped with a heated shelter and canopy, alongside a five-bay bus loop serving GO Transit and regional transportation providers.
Additional infrastructure will include 220 parking spaces, bicycle parking facilities and designated passenger pick-up and drop-off areas.
These facilities are intended to improve connections between local transportation networks and regional rail services, providing commuters with additional options for travelling to workplaces, educational institutions and other destinations.
“Families in Grimsby and across Niagara Region need fast, reliable transit that gets them where they need to go, and that’s exactly what our government is delivering,” said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West. “Grimsby GO will be a complete game changer for this community, cutting travel times, improving access to jobs and creating new opportunities for families and businesses as we deliver the largest transit expansion in North America.”
Standardized Station Design Aims to Reduce Costs and Construction Timelines
Grimsby GO Station will serve as an initial test of Ontario’s standardized approach to station construction, which emphasizes consistent designs and more efficient project delivery.
“Grimsby GO Station represents a new way of bringing transit infrastructure to communities across our region. As the first GO station built through our streamlined station delivery approach, it will help us deliver functional stations more quickly and provide better value for money. With major construction now underway, we’re excited to be working alongside Niagara Region and the Town of Grimsby to bring GO rail service directly to the community.”

The government has not disclosed the value of the Grimsby construction contract in its announcement.
Niagara Business Community Highlights Economic Benefits
Regional business representatives have identified improved transportation connections as an important factor in supporting workforce mobility and commercial investment.
“Niagara’s businesses need better connections to workers, customers and markets across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. The new Grimsby GO Station is an important piece of that infrastructure, and another step toward the more frequent and reliable GO service Niagara needs to support continued growth and investment. We thank the Province of Ontario for this investment and for continuing to improve transportation connections between Niagara and the rest of the Greater Golden Horseshoe.”
— Mishka Balsom, CEO, Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce
“CUTA thanks the Ontario government for its continued investment in public transit. The new Grimsby GO Station will make transit more convenient for Niagara residents. This investment will strengthen regional connections and support economic growth.”
— Marco D’Angelo, President & CEO, Canadian Urban Transit Association
Ontario Continues $70 Billion Transit Infrastructure Expansion
Ontario says it is investing $70 billion in transit expansion projects across the province, including more than $15 billion already committed to the GO Expansion program.
Related investments include Confederation GO Station in Hamilton and major upgrades to West Harbour GO Station.
The province has also introduced weekend GO Train service between Kitchener and Toronto and daily round trips connecting Toronto and Stratford.
With major construction underway, Grimsby GO Station represents another step toward expanding regional rail access in southern Ontario. Its anticipated completion in 2027 will provide a new transportation connection for Niagara residents and businesses, although the frequency and operating schedule of future services have not yet been detailed in the announcement.
