Richmond Hill, Ontario musician Katie Dauson has released “Fresh Sugar,” a country-rock love ballad that draws on classic influences while reflecting the independent artist’s hands-on approach to songwriting, recording and visual presentation.
The new single, released through Frog & Bog Records, centres on the rush of finding a relationship that suddenly brings clarity and excitement. Dauson wrote and composed the track herself, provided vocals and rhythm guitar, and also designed the single’s artwork.
‘Fresh Sugar’ Emerged From an Unexpected Moment of Inspiration
The idea for “Fresh Sugar” arrived quickly while Dauson was listening to a Raspberries record on vinyl on her father’s birthday. A musical moment gave her both the title and central hook, prompting her to stop the record and begin writing immediately in the family room of her home, where much of her songwriting takes place.
That spontaneity is reflected in the song’s direct approach to romance. Rather than treating love cautiously, Dauson presents it as something powerful, immediate and transformative.
“You’re just like fresh sugar baby, it’s the sweetest thing I know, your lovin’ drives me crazy, and you electrify my soul,” she sings in the chorus.
Earlier in the song, she describes the feeling as “harder than the hardest diamond, bigger than torrential rain.”
The lyrics position “Fresh Sugar” as an unabashed love song, combining familiar country themes with the stronger guitar-driven elements that have become part of Dauson’s musical identity.
Vaughan Recording Brings Together Country and Rock Influences
Dauson recorded the single at Cleveland Sound Lab in Vaughan, Ontario, working with producer and engineer James Nickle.
Her involvement extended beyond performing. In addition to writing and composing the song, Dauson handled vocals and rhythm guitar while overseeing creative elements surrounding the release, including its artwork.
A Sound That Draws From Several Musical Traditions
Dauson’s catalogue incorporates elements of rock and roll, rockabilly, surf rock, country, folk and bluegrass. Her stated influences span several generations and styles, including The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Fats Domino, Electric Light Orchestra and Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot.
That mix has allowed her to work across genres rather than settle into a narrowly defined musical category.
Her career in music also followed an unconventional route. Before pursuing performance, Dauson studied physics and astronomy at York University and worked at the university’s observatory, where she tracked variable stars.
She also spent time at Richmond Hill’s David Dunlap Observatory under the guidance of astronomer Dr. Tom Bolton, known for work that helped establish Cygnus X-1 as the first widely accepted black-hole candidate.
Health setbacks eventually led Dauson away from an astronomy-focused career. She later studied creative advertising and video game design before music became her primary direction.
Open-Mic Performance Helped Shift Dauson Toward Music
A pivotal moment came at a local open mic, where Dauson performed her original song “Virtual Sky.” The audience response, which began before listeners were told she had written the song herself, encouraged her to pursue songwriting and live performance more seriously.
Since then, she has developed a full-band setup designed to accommodate the stylistic range of her material.
Her live group features Trenton Moore on drums, Lex Stultz on bass, Blake Little on lead guitar and Darren Armoogam on keyboards. Kun Huang and Walter Chan contribute to the horn section on saxophone and flute.
Toronto Performance Set for October 23
Dauson and her band are scheduled to perform at Toronto’s El Mocambo Tavern on October 23, giving audiences an opportunity to hear material from her growing catalogue in a live setting.
With “Fresh Sugar,” Dauson continues to build her work around independently crafted songs that combine personal storytelling with influences drawn from country, rock and roots music.
The single also reinforces the Richmond Hill musician’s approach to maintaining close creative control over her work, from the first stages of songwriting through recording and presentation. At its core, “Fresh Sugar” keeps its message straightforward: an energetic celebration of the moment when love arrives unexpectedly and changes the emotional landscape.
