Band says new single challenges social stigmas while promoting themes of empowerment and autonomy
Bubblegum alternative metal trio Nova Riot has released the music video for its latest single, “Midnight Coven Crush”, marking the second visual instalment from the band’s forthcoming debut album Blood, Lies & Lullabies, due for release on 21 August 2026 through Eclipse Records.
The Oklahoma-based group, which describes its sound as “bubblegum alternative metal”, premiered the video globally via YouTube, presenting a visually ambitious production that blends heavy guitar-driven music with colourful aesthetics and horror-inspired imagery. Directed by frontwoman Nova Ray, the video explores themes of personal empowerment, bodily autonomy and resistance to social hierarchies, while continuing the band’s growing emphasis on cinematic storytelling.
A Visual Statement on Empowerment
According to the band, “Midnight Coven Crush” was conceived as both a musical and visual statement addressing issues many women face in everyday life. The narrative seeks to challenge established perceptions and portray its characters as active agents of change rather than passive participants within traditional power structures.
The concept combines dramatic imagery with symbolic storytelling, using horror-inspired elements to reinforce the song’s broader message. Band members said considerable attention was given during the editing process to ensure the visual themes supported the underlying narrative rather than overshadowed it.
The release arrives at a time when visual content has become increasingly important in music promotion, particularly as artists compete for audience attention across social media platforms.
“It’s important to connect visually in today’s ever-expanding world of social media,” explains bassist Orion. “If you can reel them in with a hooky video, chances are you will connect with some new fans, so we hope we’ve accomplished that here!”
Frontwoman Nova Ray said the video’s message centres on reclaiming control over personal narratives and confronting societal expectations.
“this video is about accepting your inner baddie while taking control of the narrative that surrounds the stigma of hierarchy, and how it relates to the typical worldview of women. Midnight Coven Crush takes that power back by force! I think just about every woman has a personal story similar to what inspired this video… Something that unfortunately gets experienced all too often. But that is what makes us incredibly fortunate… we get to write the ending. That’s a powerful experience!”
Building Momentum Ahead of Debut Album

The band has focused heavily on visual presentation and world-building alongside its music, seeking to create an immersive experience that extends beyond traditional album releases.

A Distinctive Identity in Heavy Music
Nova Riot has emerged from Durant, Oklahoma, with a mission to challenge conventions within the modern heavy music scene. Operating under the slogan “Music with No Apologies”, the group has sought to differentiate itself through a fusion of aggressive instrumentation, melodic hooks and highly stylised visuals.
The trio consists of Nova Ray on vocals, Orion on bass guitar and Ares on lead guitar. Together, they have cultivated a sound that intentionally blurs the lines between mainstream accessibility and alternative metal intensity.
As anticipation builds for Blood, Lies & Lullabies, the release of “Midnight Coven Crush” provides a further indication of the band’s creative direction. With its combination of bold imagery, social commentary and polished production, the single represents a significant step in Nova Riot’s efforts to establish itself within an increasingly competitive rock and metal landscape.
The music video for “Midnight Coven Crush” is available now on YouTube, while the single can be streamed through major digital music services worldwide.
