Annual fundraising event attracts more than 900 participants in support of new long-term care centres
RICHMOND HILL, Ont. — Mon Sheong Foundation’s annual Walk & Fun event drew more than 900 participants on Saturday, June 6, 2026, raising funds to support the organization’s ongoing expansion of long-term care services across the Greater Toronto Area.
Held at Richmond Green Sports Centre & Park, the event supported the Foundation’s Because We Care Capital Campaign, which is focused on funding the development of new long-term care facilities in Markham and Richmond Hill. Nearly 20 dignitaries representing municipal, provincial and federal governments attended the opening ceremony.
The fundraising walk was followed by a family-oriented Fun Fair featuring game booths, an inflatable playground, live entertainment and food stations, turning the event into a major community gathering for residents of all ages.
Mon Sheong advances long-term care expansion in Ontario
“This year’s Walk & Fun marks our 40th year of walking together as a community to build a brighter, better future for our seniors. This annual event raises the crucial funds needed to drive Mon Sheong Foundation’s development of new long-term centres,” said Tim Kwan, Chairman of Mon Sheong Foundation.
“Our Markham Long-Term Care Centre has reached the final stage of construction, which is expected to conclude in mid-2026. The 320-bed facility has been officially listed with Ontario Health atHome since April 21. It is slated to open in fall this year. Meanwhile, construction of our second location in Richmond Hill is also in full swing. The 288-bed care home is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.”
The organization said the Markham project represents a major milestone in its long-term strategy to expand access to senior care services amid growing demand across Ontario.
Markham facility expected to become city’s largest long-term care centre
Garth Low, President of Mon Sheong Foundation, said the upcoming Markham facility will significantly expand the organization’s regional presence.
“Our upcoming long-term care centre in Markham marks a significant expansion of our footprint in the city. The 11-storey facility will also stand as Markham’s largest long-term care centre and its design is calibrated around the principle of resident-centred care. We hope the community will continue to support our endeavours to develop more new facilities so that more people get access to the high-quality care they need sooner.”
The charity walk followed a scenic trail loop within Richmond Green Park, with fundraising teams formed by families, corporations, community organizations and groups of friends. Participants who completed the route received commemorative medals recognizing their contribution.
Fun Fair activities attract families and multi-generational support
Organizers said the event was designed to combine fundraising efforts with family-friendly programming aimed at broad community engagement.
“We are grateful to see such an impressive turnout, with multiple generations coming together for a meaningful cause,” said Mon Sheong Foundation First Vice-Chair and Event Co-Chair Doris Chan, “we want to thank the community for their generous support and everyone who stepped up to support our seniors.”
“Our Fun Fair featured a wide range of activities designed to appeal to the whole family: an inflatable playground, a massage station, a Pilates station, a face painting booth, a photo booth, and game booths with exciting prizes. Supporting the growth of long-term care facilities was a key theme integrated into many of our games. Visitors also enjoyed fairground staples such as cotton candy, popcorn and pizza, along with live performances of Zumba, line dance and singing. We are glad to see these activities proved to be immensely popular among participants of all ages. We hope this event successfully highlights the Foundation’s mission and continues to garner public support.”
The Foundation also acknowledged support from a broad network of sponsors, community partners and volunteers who contributed to the event’s success.
Sponsors and volunteers recognized for contributions
Board Member and Event Co-Chair Andrew Banh thanked Power Match Donor The Chow Family for helping amplify fundraising efforts through donation matching.
“We want to thank Event Sponsor MediSystem Pharmacy, alongside many more sponsors, partners and fundraising teams,” Banh said, before recognizing dozens of corporate, community and media partners involved in the event.
“We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to our talented performers, booth organizers, Event Organizing Team Members, staff team, and the 70 volunteers who contributed to this successful event,” added Banh.
Donations remain open until June 12
Mon Sheong Foundation confirmed donations for Walk & Fun 2026 will continue to be accepted until Friday, June 12. Donations of $20 or more qualify for a charitable tax receipt.
Participants raising $500 or more will receive a $20 Pizzaville voucher, while those raising at least $1,000 will also receive a portable speaker. Additional prizes will be awarded to top fundraisers across child, youth, adult and senior categories.
