Canadian Blues Veterans to Perform in Toronto and London This June
Tom Lavin & The Legendary Powder Blues are set to bring their long-running blend of blues, swing, jazz, rock and roll, and rhythm and blues to Ontario audiences later this month with performances scheduled in Toronto and London.
The Vancouver-based group will perform at Hugh’s Room Live in Toronto on June 24 before heading to Aeolian Hall in London, Ont., on June 26. Both concerts are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., with tickets currently available through the band’s official website.
For nearly five decades, Powder Blues has maintained a prominent place within Canada’s blues music scene, building a reputation through extensive touring, commercial success, and international recognition. The band’s upcoming Ontario performances arrive as the group marks its 48th anniversary in 2026.
A Career Built Outside Traditional Industry Channels
Powder Blues first gained national attention following the release of its debut album, Uncut. According to the band’s history, major record labels initially rejected the project, arguing that there was limited commercial demand for blues music. Instead of pursuing traditional label support, the group promoted the album directly to radio stations.
The strategy quickly generated public interest, with listeners contacting stations in large numbers to identify the band behind the music. The early response helped drive rapid sales of the album and ultimately attracted interest from the same labels that had initially passed on the project.
Since then, Powder Blues has sold more than one million records worldwide, becoming one of Canada’s most commercially successful blues acts.
International Touring and Industry Recognition
Over the course of its career, the band has appeared at major festivals and venues across North America and Europe. Powder Blues has headlined the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and received recognition from the Blues Foundation in Memphis, Tenn.
The group also earned a Juno Award for Best New Band and toured alongside several influential figures in blues and rock music, including Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, James Brown, Albert Collins, James Cotton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
The longevity of the band has allowed it to remain active across multiple generations of live music audiences, with performances continuing to attract fans of blues, jazz, and classic rhythm and blues traditions.
Tom Lavin’s Role in the Band’s Success
At the centre of Powder Blues is guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer Tom Lavin, who founded and continues to lead the group from Vancouver.
Originally from Chicago, Lavin brought a strong blues influence to Canada’s West Coast music scene and became known for combining traditional blues structures with swing and rock arrangements. He wrote several of the band’s most recognized songs, including “Doin’ It Right (On the Wrong Side of Town)” and “Boppin’ With the Blues.”
Beyond his work with Powder Blues, Lavin has contributed to projects involving Canadian and international artists such as Prism, April Wine, Long John Baldry, and Amos Garrett. His production and songwriting work has earned both gold and platinum record certifications.
Industry organizations have also recognized Lavin individually for his work as a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and producer. He has received honours from the British Columbia Music Industry Association as well as recognition through the American W.C. Handy Awards.
Continuing Legacy in Canadian Music
The band’s continued touring schedule highlights its enduring role within Canada’s live music landscape. Powder Blues remains one of the country’s longest-running blues acts, with more than a dozen album releases and a concert DVD continuing to circulate internationally.
The group’s live performances have become known for attracting wide-ranging audiences, combining dance-oriented blues arrangements with elements of jazz, swing, and classic rock influences.
As the band approaches five decades together, the upcoming Ontario concerts are expected to draw longtime fans as well as younger audiences discovering the group’s catalogue for the first time.
