Three-day melodic and power metal showcase to draw fans to The Cobalt and Rickshaw Theatre
VANCOUVER — One of British Columbia’s most prominent niche music events is set to take the stage this week as Hyperspace Metalfest returns for its seventh edition, bringing a lineup of international and Canadian metal acts to venues across Vancouver from April 16 to 18.
Positioned as a key gathering for fans of melodic and power metal, the festival will span two venues — The Cobalt on April 16 and 17, followed by a final night at the Rickshaw Theatre on April 18. This year’s edition features performances from Sanctuary, Edge of Paradise, Atavistia, Voidchaser, Owlbear, and Artificial Language, among others.
Organizers say the 2026 edition carries added significance, as the festival will enter an indefinite hiatus after this year.
Final opportunity for fans as festival pauses operations
Festival organizer Joey Hockin of Journeyman Productions underscored the importance of this year’s event in a statement highlighting both the lineup and the festival’s uncertain future.
“Hyperspace Metal Festival VII is here! Sanctuary will be performing a Canadian exclusive performance of Into The Mirror Black in its entirety! Atavistia will headline night 1, which will feature a heavy emphasis on melodic death metal. Night two headliner Edge of Paradise will cap off a night of epic symphonic and melodic power metal! After this year, the festival will be going on indefinite hiatus, so if you’ve been wanting to make it to Hyperspace, this could be your last chance. Let’s rage together at the Rickshaw and the Cobalt one last time!”
The announcement positions the 2026 event as both a celebration and a potential farewell, adding urgency for attendees and industry observers alike. While no specific reasons for the hiatus were disclosed, pauses in independent festival operations are not uncommon amid rising production costs and shifting audience dynamics in the live music sector.
Lineup highlights and programming structure
The three-day schedule is designed to showcase a range of subgenres within melodic and power metal, with each day featuring a distinct musical focus.
Day One emphasizes melodic death metal
Opening night on April 16 at The Cobalt will be headlined by Atavistia, supported by Inpathos, Hyperstrike, Ravensun, and Kayas. Organizers describe the evening as leaning heavily into melodic death metal, appealing to fans of heavier, more aggressive sounds within the genre.
Day Two spotlights symphonic and power metal
The second night, April 17, will feature Edge of Paradise as headliner, alongside The Scepter, Lycanthro, Ophelia Falling, and Valley of Despair. This portion of the festival shifts toward symphonic and melodic power metal, offering a more theatrical and melodic experience.
Day Three delivers marquee performances and debuts
The final night on April 18 at the Rickshaw Theatre will be headlined by Sanctuary, performing Into The Mirror Black in its entirety — a rare presentation billed as a Canadian exclusive.
The closing lineup also includes Canadian debut performances from Owlbear and Artificial Language, as well as sets from Voidchaser and Witchkiller.
Industry and community significance
Hyperspace Metalfest has built a reputation over its previous six editions as a platform for both emerging and established acts within a specialized segment of the metal scene. Its focus on melodic and power metal distinguishes it from broader heavy music festivals, contributing to Vancouver’s cultural diversity in live music offerings.
The event has also served as a networking and exposure opportunity for Canadian bands, particularly those operating outside mainstream genres. The inclusion of international acts alongside domestic talent reflects a hybrid model increasingly common among independent festivals seeking to balance global appeal with local development.
Ticketing and audience engagement
Organizers have made both single-day and full festival passes available through online ticketing platforms, with additional promotional efforts including curated playlists and social media engagement to build anticipation.
Industry observers note that curated playlists and digital promotion have become essential tools for niche festivals aiming to reach geographically dispersed fan bases.
A closing chapter — for now
While the future of Hyperspace Metalfest remains uncertain beyond 2026, this year’s edition is expected to draw strong attendance from dedicated fans eager to experience what may be the festival’s final installment.

For Vancouver’s live music ecosystem, the hiatus represents both a loss and a moment of reflection on the sustainability of independent festivals. For fans, however, the focus remains firmly on the immediate — a three-day event celebrating a genre and community that has defined Hyperspace since its inception.
