Vancouver metal band signals next phase with “Defenders” and international distribution deal
VANCOUVER — Canadian heavy metal band Iron Kingdom is set to release its sixth studio album, Shadows and Dust, on June 6, 2026, marking a significant milestone for the independent act as it expands its global reach through a new partnership with France-based Steel Shark Records.
The Vancouver-based group has unveiled “Defenders,” the first single and accompanying music video from the upcoming album, offering an early glimpse into a project that blends historical themes with personal storytelling. The release also signals the band’s continued evolution in both sound and international distribution, including a limited European edition of the album.
Steel Shark Records will issue an exclusive EU release capped at 300 double-CD copies. The first disc will feature the full Shadows and Dust album, while the second will compile a “Best Of” selection spanning Iron Kingdom’s previous five records. A third vinyl colour variant, limited to 100 copies, will also be made available exclusively to European fans.
“Defenders” draws on history and personal roots
“Defenders” reflects the band’s signature style while incorporating emotionally driven subject matter. Inspired by the Battle of Gdansk during the Second World War, the track pays tribute to Polish soldiers who resisted Nazi forces for seven days.
Frontman Chris Osterman said the song carries personal significance tied to his family history.
“Being that my family is half Polish, this song strikes a chord for me. I imagined what my great-grandfather experienced riding with the Polish cavalry in WWII, and I also imagined what people in Ukraine must be feeling right now. Even though the song is fast and heavy, it’s very emotional. It speaks to the courage of those who defend their families, their friends, and their way of life,” says Osterman.
Musically, the single continues the band’s adherence to traditional heavy metal, featuring fast tempos, melodic guitar work and influences drawn from European power metal acts.
Album explores darker themes while maintaining accessibility
Shadows and Dust represents a thematic shift for the band, delving into subjects such as death, hardship and impermanence while maintaining a sense of resilience.
“This album plays in a dark realm of topics, but I think that’s what will make it accessible to people going through tough times. The music shows hope for a positive way out. It’s a journey from front to back,” adds Osterman.
The album artwork, created by Alan Lathwell, draws inspiration from the track “Blood and Steel” and the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. The imagery depicts an army advancing through a harsh landscape, symbolizing endurance in the face of adversity.
Touring strategy underscores grassroots growth
Iron Kingdom will support the album release with an extensive cross-country tour, beginning with a hometown headline performance at Vancouver’s Rickshaw Theatre on June 5. The band will then embark on a multi-week tour spanning Western and Eastern Canada, including festival appearances at Armstrong Metal Fest in British Columbia and Loud As Hell Open Air Festival in Alberta.
The tour schedule reflects a broad geographic reach, with stops in major urban centres such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, as well as smaller markets including Yellowknife, Dawson City and Corner Brook.
This approach aligns with the band’s longstanding grassroots touring model, which has seen them build a national and international following through consistent live performances.
Independent band builds international presence
Formed in 2011, Iron Kingdom has spent more than a decade developing a reputation within the global heavy metal scene. The band cites influences from genre mainstays such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Rush, and has toured across Canada, the United States, Europe and Brazil.
The partnership with Steel Shark Records marks a strategic step in expanding their footprint in European markets, where demand for traditional heavy metal remains strong.
With Shadows and Dust, Iron Kingdom aims to balance its established sound with new thematic depth, positioning the album as both a continuation of its musical identity and a progression into more introspective territory.
As the band prepares for its June release and national tour, “Defenders” serves as both a tribute to historical resilience and a signal of Iron Kingdom’s ongoing commitment to the genre it has championed for over a decade.
