Cambridge, Ont. — The City of Cambridge has received a $10,000 sponsorship from GrandBridge Energy to support the purchase of fitness equipment for the new Cambridge Recreation Complex, a major municipal project slated to open in late 2026.
The contribution was formally presented to city council on Monday evening and will be directed toward outfitting the complex’s fitness area with modern equipment designed to serve residents of all ages and abilities. City officials say the sponsorship will help ensure the facility opens with accessible, community-focused amenities that align with long-term health and wellness goals.
The Cambridge Recreation Complex represents one of the city’s most significant investments in community infrastructure in recent years. Designed as a multi-purpose, integrated facility, the complex is intended to meet rising demand for recreational services while supporting population growth across the municipality.
Mayor Jan Liggett said the sponsorship underscores the importance of collaboration between the city and corporate partners in delivering projects that benefit the broader community.
“Partnerships like this truly make a difference for our community and allow residents of all ages to connect, engage, and stay active,” said Mayor Jan Liggett. “We’re looking forward to opening the new recreation complex and are deeply grateful to GrandBridge Energy for their generous support in creating a space that promotes healthy living and brings people together. Their continued commitment helps make them stand shoulders above their corporate mandate making them a valued member of our community turning our vision into a reality that will benefit Cambridge for years to come.”
According to city staff, the funding will be applied directly to new fitness equipment, supporting a wide range of programming and individual use. The goal is to ensure the fitness area is inclusive and adaptable, accommodating users with different physical abilities, experience levels and wellness objectives.
Corporate sponsorships have become an increasingly common tool for municipalities seeking to enhance public facilities without increasing the tax burden on residents. In Cambridge’s case, officials say support from organizations such as GrandBridge Energy helps accelerate project timelines and improve the quality of amenities offered.
GrandBridge Energy President and CEO Sarah Hughes said the sponsorship aligns with the utility’s strategic priorities and long-standing relationship with the communities it serves.
“GrandBridge Energy is proud to support the new Cambridge Recreation Complex with a $10,000 sponsorship to help fund the facility’s fitness equipment. This investment reinforces our commitment to the Customers & Community pillar of our five-year Strategic Plan and contributes to a space where local residents can stay active and enhance their well-being. We are looking forward to the opening of the modern, multipurpose recreation complex—which will be powered by GrandBridge Energy,” said Sarah Hughes, President and CEO, GrandBridge Energy.
The complex, located on Wesley Boulevard, is being developed as a shared-use community hub and will combine recreational, cultural and educational spaces under one roof. Plans for the facility include a 10-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, a warm water therapeutic pool, three FIBA-regulation gymnasiums, a running and walking track, a fully equipped fitness area and multiple multi-purpose rooms.
In addition to sports and fitness amenities, the complex will house an Idea Exchange library branch, a concession area and park amenities. The site will also be integrated with two schools, reinforcing its role as a central gathering place for families and residents throughout the city.
Construction of the Cambridge Recreation Complex is ongoing, with city officials maintaining that the project remains on track for a late-2026 opening. As development progresses, municipal leaders say continued partnerships with local organizations and businesses will be key to delivering a facility that meets community expectations and supports long-term economic and social well-being.
City staff noted that additional sponsorship and partnership opportunities related to the complex may be announced as construction advances and planning for programming and operations continues.
