Cambridge, Ont. — The Cambridge Fire Department (CFD) is inviting residents to get an inside look at the work of local firefighters during its annual Open House on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Station 1, 1625 Bishop Street North.
Running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event offers families and community members the chance to meet fire personnel, tour emergency vehicles, and take part in activities designed to raise awareness of fire safety. The open house will feature junior firefighter games, a live fire demonstration, and opportunities to connect with community partners.
A barbecue will also be available, with proceeds directed to Camp BUCKO, a charitable camp that supports children recovering from burn injuries by providing them with a safe and healing environment.
A Family-Friendly Tradition
The open house has become a popular tradition in Cambridge, blending public education with family fun. Mayor Jan highlighted its dual purpose of community engagement and charitable giving.
“This family event is a great opportunity to connect with our local fire department and show support for a meaningful cause,” said Mayor Jan. “Every donation helps and serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of fire safety. Take a behind-the-scenes look at the important work our firefighters do and enjoy a fun day with the community.”
The event gives residents an opportunity to see beyond the sirens and fire trucks, providing insight into the skills, training, and day-to-day responsibilities of fire personnel.
Focus on Lithium-Ion Battery Safety
This year’s event aligns with Fire Prevention Week, taking place October 5–11, which carries the theme “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”
From smartphones and laptops to e-bikes, toys, and power tools, lithium-ion batteries are now part of everyday life. While reliable, they can present fire hazards if misused or improperly disposed of.
“Lithium-ion batteries are becoming a part of our everyday lives, but when they’re damaged, overcharged, or discarded improperly, they can become dangerous,” said Chief Rob Martin. “A few simple safety habits can keep these batteries working safely, prevent fires, and help keep your family protected.”
CFD officials are encouraging residents to take simple precautions: purchase only certified products, follow manufacturer charging guidelines, and dispose of used batteries at safe, designated drop-off sites.
Strengthening Community Connections
Beyond safety messaging, the event reinforces the fire department’s role at the heart of the community. Families will be able to climb aboard fire trucks, speak directly with firefighters, and watch live demonstrations of fire suppression techniques.
By providing an engaging, hands-on experience, CFD hopes to instill fire safety awareness in younger residents while also reminding adults of best practices at home.
The open house also serves as a platform for building relationships with local organizations, showcasing the network of community partners that support public safety and emergency preparedness.
Supporting a Worthy Cause
All proceeds from the barbecue will benefit Camp BUCKO (Burn Camp for Kids in Ontario), a volunteer-driven organization that gives burn survivors aged 7–17 a chance to connect with peers, build confidence, and recover in a supportive environment.
The camp provides a safe space where children can focus on healing and growth, surrounded by others who have faced similar challenges. Contributions raised at the open house will go directly toward funding these programs.
