AMHERSTBURG, ON — Mayor Wayne Hurst today announced that United Communities Credit Union has secured the naming rights to the new Multi-Use Recreation Complex currently under construction in Amherstburg, Ontario.

United Communities Credit Union will make a $500,000 contribution to the Amherstburg Community Foundation for the complex naming rights for a period of 40 years. The agreement was approved in principle by Amherstburg Town Council at a Public Council Meeting held this evening.

"The complex brings together healthy living, enhanced quality of life, as well as environmental and economic benefits; all of which are a part of the United Communities Credit Union Brand. We are proud to be partnering with the Town of Amherstburg in offering the community this dynamic, all-inclusive regional sport and recreation landmark,” said Jim Lynn, President and CEO, United Communities Credit Union.

Lynn continued " We are excited for the opportunity to have a significant presence in Amherstburg and the surrounding area and to remind the region that we are open for business and we want to work together to build strong vibrant communities.

“This is an unprecedented investment in sport, recreation and leisure in the Town of Amherstburg, and great news for our community.” said Mayor Wayne Hurst. “United Communities Credit Union has demonstrated a high level of confidence in the future of sport, recreation and leisure in the Town and we are deeply grateful to them for championing this project.”

The new complex is located at Simcoe and Meloche Roads and will house Canada’s first Miracle League Baseball Diamond for persons with special needs; Ontario’s first community artificial turf baseball diamond; the region’s first regulation size FIFA soccer/CFL football field; twin pad arenas; a mini practice ice rink; an indoor soccer playing field; and a Seniors Centre.

The new complex will meet the recreational needs of the entire community, provide numerous opportunities for sport tourism, and will be eligible for LEED Silver Certification for energy efficiency. The Town of Amherstburg received funding for the construction of the $23.6 million recreation complex from the governments of Canada and Ontario under the Build Canada Funding Program.

The Town of Amherstburg has embarked on a $2 million fundraising campaign to offset its contribution to the project. To date, the fundraising campaign has raised in excess of $1.5 million from corporate and personal donations.
