Stories of ocean conservation triumphs are front and centre in a new podcast from global organization Ocean Wise. My Ocean takes listeners into the minds and journeys of some of the world’s true ocean champions and dives in to the remarkable ways they are protecting our blue planet.

My Ocean

WireService.ca Media Release (02/15/2018) Vancouver, BC - Each episode profiles a new leader, someone who has thrown convention to the wind and instead followed their own path to making a difference for the world's oceans. They are the dreamers and the doers who are going to great depths to speak up and effect change for healthy rivers, lakes and oceans. The stories told in the podcast will engage and inspire listeners about how they, too, can change the way they think and act when it comes to conserving our oceans.

The first three episodes, now available, features in-depth conversation with these changemakers:

· California-based entrepreneurial neuroscientist Wallace J. Nichols is changing the way we think about our brain "on water." He refers to this as the Blue Mind, a movement and science that looks at the cognitive, emotional, psychological, social and spiritual benefits of healthy oceans and waterways. He envisions a world in which traditional medicine is prescribed alongside water therapy like surfing; his science has shown that the positive impacts of water can be that powerful. Protecting those waterways is, Nichols says, vital to reaping their benefits.

· Karina Oliani is a Brazilian-based TV personality who has a thirst for adrenaline. She's a doctor with a specialization in wilderness medicine, has set wakeboarding records and climbed Everest twice. More recently, she has turned that energy towards ocean conservation. She's making a name with her stunning photoshoots in which she gets up close with sharks while wearing ornate evening dresses or flowing fabric, to make a statement about how humans, predators and nature can exist harmoniously.

· A marine ecologist with the Howe Sound Research Group, part of the Coastal Ocean Research Institute, an Ocean Wise initiative, Jess Schultz is conducting research and informing policy that is breathing life back in to Howe Sound. Its wildlife was largely destroyed by industrial pollution during the 20th century. She turned to marine science after reading a book while serving in Afghanistan and it inspired her to change course. It's all part of her drive to serve a purpose greater than herself, whether it's her country or the ocean.

Hosted by Alexis Brown, My Ocean will air bi-weekly and episodes will be available at http://ocean.org/myocean and on iTunes and Google Play.

My Ocean is the latest extension of Ocean Wise's storytelling platforms, building on the launch of Ocean.org last year. Created to bring about a sea change, Ocean Wise aims to generate a powerful momentum to raise a higher level of awareness of the state of our oceans.

Ocean Wise launched on World Ocean's Day as a global ocean conservation organization focused on protecting and restoring our world's oceans. Building on the roots of the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, which started as a community-based not-for-profit organization, Ocean Wise aims to inspire people in every corner of the planet to participate in creating healthy oceans.
