“African-American Filmmaker Honored by United States Postal Service”
New York, New York- May 12, 2010--Oscar Micheaux, was one of the pioneering African-American filmmakers in America. His accomplishments in publishing and films were above extraordinary. He was the most successful and controversial African-American filmmaker of the silent era. He took the lead, in the production of feature length black films with sound, during his time.
In his motion pictures, he moved away from the "Negro” stereotypes being portrayed in films at the time. During his illustrious career, Oscar Micheaux wrote, produced and directed forty-four feature-length films between 1919 and 1948 and wrote seven novels, one of which was a national bestseller.
In 1986, Mr. Micheaux was honored by, The Directors Guild of America. In 1987 he received a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1994 there was a documentary created about his life, titled “Midnight Rambles”, named after The Midnight Rambles, in which cinemas would show films at midnight to African-American audiences. In 2002, he was placed on a list of 100 Greatest African-Americans.
On June 23rd, 2010, The Ebony Society of Philatelic Events and Reflections, The Museum of African American Cinema, The African American Women In Cinema, and the United States Postal Service will celebrate the unveiling of an Oscar Micheaux Stamp, as a part of the “Our Black Heritage Stamp Series”. This series started in 1978 with a stamp of Harriet Tubman and has since paid tribute to many African American leaders, inventors, educators, scientists, entrepreneurs, entertainers and athletes”.
Honored guest include, the legendary Mrs. Ruby Dee-Davis, who will be unveiling the stamp and Emmy Award winning, producer, writer & director William Greaves. The keynote speaker will be African-American Film historian Pearl Bowser.
This monumental event will take place in the Art Gallery of The Adam Clayton Powell Building, located at 163 West 125th Street. East of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard (Seventh Avenue) from 12 pm-2:30pm. The unveiling of the stamp will be followed by a screening of Oscar Micheaux’s films from 3:30pm-9:00pm.
The event sponsors include, The New York State Office of General Services, Starbucks and The Tomlinson Agency. This event is also in partnership with the Wadleigh High School of the Performing and Visual Arts in Harlem.
